Boat in build pics (Squadron 78)

Congrats JFM. having run the boat four a year you must have some interesting ideas / tweaks to enhance the new boat.

New thread is a must. I for one will subscribe and I know you will have many others.

Just to clarify... the new Squadron 80 is a while away and Fairline are concentrating on bring some new models to market ahead of it, and anyway the Sq78 still sells all they can produce (you cnnot get a new build slot for over a year). So I've decided for a bit of fun to buy another Sq78 for now. I love the one I have (sitting on it typing this) but I quite like the build process to be honest, and the second boat in a series is always going to be better than the first becuase you learn a few things from the first one. So the new boat is ordered and deposit paid, and goes into the mould in a few weeks, and the main build will be June-December 2012 after which it is tentatively scheduled to be exhibited at LIBS 2013 (though that could change) and then I'll get it to France ready for Easter 2013. My current Match will find her way to new ownership some time this summer. Various people interested, nothing signed yet, but I'm confident she will sell to a good home!

I have a number of ideas for tweaks on the new boat which I'll have to post about on mby.com in due course. Given that the new boat will be 90% same as current one there is a risk that an "in build" thread will be rather deja vu and maybe not as interesting. But if you tell me you are such boat geeks that you like in build threads even of the same make/model, I'll be happy to do a new thread and post pictures as the build progresses.

I gotta say I would be delighted if you welcomed a new thread on the build because the input/opinions/debate from folks on here is very valuable during a build. Collectively there are millions of sea hours/miles/brain cells on here, and for example the design of my internal staircase benefitted hugely from forum input the last time round (and that design will go onto the new boat 100% identical, apart from a weld grind/polish tweak, because it has been 100% successful on board Match)

Well, my gaste is totally flabbered, didn't see that coming. After our conversation at LIBS, what age do you plan on retiring.:D

OK then will do. And thanks in advance for the ideas. "post occupancy evaluation " sounds a tech architectural term Virtuvas :) but yes it is something we all do as boaters I suppose. I have a list of POE mods for the new boat but the stuff that was developed on this forum like staircase design is not on that list because it has worked so well :)

I'll start the new thread in a couple of months. New boat doesn't even get gelcoat painted into the mould for a few weeks. And yes mike/LJS, I'll apply for freeman of the city of Oundle. A plaque or statue is a longshot but a certificate that lets me park on double yellow lines would be nice :-)

Another thread please!

Alltough im not really in this league regarding size of boat yet i really loved this thread. Would love to read a new thread about the building of your new boat.

Jfm - your original thread was the reason for me signing up here in the first place after reading about Match in MBY magazine. I read the thread from start to end during a couple of days this winter and like everyone else I am truly fascinated by the insight you provide into the build of your boat.

Your new build thread will be very closely followed (and appriciated) from my side!

Thanks!

WOW, CONGRATULATIONS jfm, I can't wait to start following your new thread it's always so informative and interesting. Whoever does get their hands on the current "match" is going to be very lucky.

As a confirmed raggie, I had hopes that jfm was going to emulate Magnum and convert to sailing. Now that would be an interesting boat :).

Congratulations, JFM. I'm sure she's going to be even more perfect than 'Match' :) A man needs his hobbies and yours seems to be boatbuilding along with boating. You have probably been asked this a hundred times, but have you ever considered being involved in designing a completely new model? Seems to me, there could be a market for a properly done 40-50 feet semi-displacement cruiser...

Great news JFM, I am sure you will improve on Match. I am looking forward to the build thread although I must say I am dissapointed this development may curtail my 'Red Dot Bay Babe' spotting later this year!:D

except from a few silicone seems in the heads :), and can't think of anything that can be improved on Match,

but John well certainly come up with more then a few things, we have never thought about.
Looking forward to the new thread

Crickey JFM, it only seems line a few months since we were monitoring Match's progress to the Med on the decks of that cargo ship. Congrats on your new 'project' :) Please do put the build up on a new thread - it will be fascinating to see what changes you make to your original customisations, and what new improvements you have thought up.

I fancy a CMN, sort of on the Grand Bleu Vintage hull
Isn't she a CNB? Not that I'd refuse an invitation on a CMN, if you would insist... :D

All the very best with the new project, looking forward to the opportunity to throw in some other crazy ideas.
Are you thinking to stick to fins or considering also gyro, to start with?
That's something to be decided even before laying the hull, I suppose.
