Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Nice to see how important the little details are, and how those details evolve (I've been reading most of the story). The attention to quality above the waterline is evident so I'm curious to know if you have still gone with rubber shaft bearings? seeing as you seem to have been involved down to the nuts and bolts of how she went together?

I hope the final stages go to plan, bet you can't wait to start some adventures with her.
Yup I stuck with rubber Neil. I realise that is old technology and there may be better stuff avaialbe, but the thing is that experience tells me that rubber likely wont fail in 1000 hours of use in the clean mediterranean, which is all I care about. To have introduced something non standard here would have eaten up engineering/customisation time (in a leap-into-the-dark kind of way - I mean I dunno how much time would have been eaten by swapping bearing material) that I didn't have, meaning something else would have had to be sacrificed

I understand, it does look like you spent a lot of time involved in the build. In bearing choice a lot comes down to the margins the stern gear suppliers make on the package supplied to the builders and builders trying to reduce costs. It is often however owners like you that initiate change and make the builders take a new look at their product or the parts they fit. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

Well, any news? I assume she arrived at Ipswich safe and sound?

Yup she arrived safe and sound yesterday afternoon. I dropped by today, in glorious sunshine. It was the first time I'd seen her without loads of busy guys building her and tools etc all over the place and I gotta say I was really pleased with the interior look and feel. Really really pleased I mean. I love the dark wood and white ceilings/trimmings combo.

We're having a bit of a sketch with the expensive Cantalupi ceiling lights. I love the colour and high CRI - really pleased with that and they actually feel better than halogens, BUT several of them are buzzing/whining. Cantalupi's agent have been to the factory to try to fix but still some of them are no good. I guess we'll have to swap a stack more of them till we get quiet ones but the noise level currently is definitely not something you could live with. Bit of a shame having spent iirc £6k or so in upgrade cost to get these. But that is a small fixable detail which I'm just sharing with the tech types on here - overall I love the boat

In a bit of hurry here and photobucket is misbehaving again but here are a few pics.

Here she is inside Fairline's hangar in Ipswich. They have a lot of work to do assembling the flybridge and I guess that will take all day Monday, then they'll launch her Tuesday I guess

I'm going to try to make it to the seatrials Wednesday and if I do I'll post pics and maybe video afterwards

Looking spectacular! Any backup plan for the errant cantalupis yet, or is it just a case of keep swapping until all is silent?

Cheers
Jimmy
Not sure. I guess so. Fairline are on the case and the Cantalupi guys have already been on the boat and heard them. Will see how it goes... Not Fairline's fault - they just fitted the lights I asked them to fit

Bit of a pity because the light quality is fantastic - better than the standard Sq78 fit Foresti Suardi LEDs, which are pretty good themselves.

There was me looking at light colour and CRI and dimming functionality, but it never occured to me when speccing lights to ask about the dB level :D :D

Thanks JFM, she looks magnificent. I love the squared portholes, really modernising the hull style. Do you know why the lights are buzzing? Is it a vibration or energy thing?

JFM,

looks really really good! an inspiration for all of us here ;)

now, regarding the (I assume) buzzing of the leds, had the same problem with my bespoke dimmable leds on 40yo brass/chrome plated fixtures. Since it was blody annoying (and with just 2 of them on, not the forest you have up there!) went back to the manufacturer who explained that that wasn't the case when placed in their original (designed by him) plastic fixtures. Following further headscratching I realised that the 40yo enclosure was resonating due to not having screwed in the led pcb and U-shaped alloy bracket tightly onto the brass enclosure.
OK, to keep the story short, it was finally a mounting problem, bolted them tightly down, sound stopped.
So, just an idea that maybe the trim hole size is a wee bit larger leaving some space for the enclosures to resonate, or by replacing/testing/removing/refitting they eventually jam them and the noise stops (only to start again after the sea trials or even worse when you're down in SOF. Extremely easy to test my theory, just touch/prress them against the trim when working and see if there's a change of tone/stop of buzzing.

good luck and hope that's the only teething problems M2 gets ;)
Hope I get to see M2 in the flesh before she flies out of SOF in a year or two!

cheers

Hi jfm,

Buzzing? I wonder...I'm having a Webasto hot water hydronic heating system fitted to Play d'eau. Some heat comes from fans blowing over matrices. As the cabin temp rises the fans gradually slow down. Knowing that reducing voltage to motors makes them buzz, the Webasto guy said the design has changed on their fan speed. The voltage is kept the same but to make them turn slower the voltage isn't decreased, it's pulsed. Result? No buzzing.

Just a thought.

Piers,

that's pulse width modulation (PWM) and that'w how all LED lights work ;)
so nothing that John can do there.

cheers

hi jfm .... thanks for your latest batch of boat "porn" pics !!!....... just BLO*DY STUNNING !!!!........ question ... on pic 2, (taken from the bow), unless its just the light, i cant see a bow thruster !!!..... is that the case ??

Hi jfm, I only stumbled across this thread a couple of weeks back. It's been great to see the build process, I can't imagine where you begin speccing something like a s78!

I keep my boat at Levington marina on the Orwell so often see new Fairlines on their way out to sea for trials. They are stunning looking boats. I was in ipswich yesterday and had a wander around the marina in town. Got a glimpse of your boat through the window in the Fairline building - she looks huge!!

I hope the sea trials go well this week. Congratulations!!

It's just the light, have a look at the first page pictures of the hull moulding, bow thruster tube in place.:)

Hmmm .. I suspect I know what the buzzing is ... Ill send you a PM.

Why the secrecy?

There is no secrecy, other than that there are a number of options and I dont want to question competitor capabilities or solutions. There will also be no benefit to anyone else unless our guys can help fix it ... and more importantly help JFM understand why... so nothing to share.
