Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Ok - finally I can visualise all of this. Spent a good bit of time on the Sq78 at LIBS yesterday. We were pretty much the only ones on it so got chance to explore properly. One word - wow!

Stunning boat and the customisations will make it even better.

Cheers, M

JFM, rather than going back thru all the previous threads, am I right that you mentioned Match 2 will be at the Cannes boat show?
I'm a boat show virgin, was going to go to LIBS but weather took a turn for the worst. Anyway, a google search reveals that Cannes is on from 10th to 15th September, and SWMBO has said that I should go (I've never been to the SoF before).
So as I followed Match 1 and now Match 2 builds, am very tempted to see Match 2 in the flesh so to speak (providing of course that Fairline let me in).
Would also be great to meet you of course and put a face to the name. ;););)

Regards,

Matthew.

Definitely. Cannes show is fab, as is SofF generally. I'd be delighted to welcome you on Match2 and show you around. PM nearer the time and swap mobile numbers, and dont worry about Fairline letting you in - of course they will. Fairline are planning a bigger stand than last year becuase of the growing prominence of Cannes show and there are zillions of gorgeous boats there to look at. It really is THE show in Europe now. SofF in September is fab - make a short holiday out of it and you'll eaily get a ride on one of the forum boats down there or do the delivery Cannes-Antibes on Match 2 if you're there on the last day (Match will sail out of the show 30mins after it closes on the last day). Same applies to any other forumites who go to Cannes

JFM Many thanks, I will definitely look forward to this and will PM you closer to the time.
Many thanks for your generosity.

I'll post some more pics shortly but meantime here is v quick tender update - on the new dashboard project.

Original dash is this:

2012-11-29_10-03-08_801.jpg

2012-11-29_10-03-18_960.jpg

Dash is really annoying. The top strip isn't tall enough for Yam gauges, so it's empty and the gauges go to left of wheel, using up all the space leaving none for a plotter. And there were other annoying things. So I got another dash from Novurania in Florida and super boatbuilder Allen at Essex Boatyards is remodelling it. Pic below from today. He created a "shelf" so as to make the top panel taller, and the Yam gauges, Carling switches and Lumishore controller will now go there in the holes you can see. A touch colour plotter can then go to left of st wheel. And the throttle lever (on rhs of console) has been relocated closer to helmsman. Pics of original and new are below. Next, this will be sprayed in gloss silver metallic Awlgrip, like the mothership dash. This is a really nice job by the Essex Boatyards team

Careful J you'll have half the forum Q'ing on the pontoon with an offer like that :D Sounds like a fun trip... some day, some day! In the meantime i'll stick with the cold, damp west of Ireland!

Here's an update from a day at the factory last week. The build is prgressing fast and is about 10 weeks off completion. I was really pleased with everything - as ever the build quality was very high, behind the scenes as well as the bits you can see.

Here's an overall view of the factory. Mine is middle of shot and the boat after mine is behind it far left and right, and in the centre is the next one after that - hull #94. Amazing tally.

Also in the pic above you might notice that the bimini is modified. On Match1 the goal posts had almost flat tops but rain puddled a bit, so the very helpful Flexicovers who make this have made it with some extra arch

Below is a bit of a tech detail - all the engine room ventilation has custom electric opening louvre vents - part of my obsession with resisting fire. The vent gadget is the silver part sandwiched between the fan and the duct in this picture (this fan is e/room exhaust btw)

Below is inside the bow cabin showing the 3 windows from inside. I'm really pleased with these - this cabin will have a fabulous view out

Here's the flybridge dash, so far. The remainder of this is secret but I'll explain the final screens and hardware in 2 weeks or so. Actually some of the gear installed in this picture will be replaced even before the boat is launched. More later.

This is a silver fabric that goes on some cabin bulkheads. May not look much in this snappy pic but this has been a real mission. The boat was going to be built with a fabric that had a bit too much beige, but the manufacturers offered a white-with-silver-sparkle colour late in the day. 10 days ago this fabric, 80m of it, was at the mill in New York and got airfreighted to Denmark then Accrington (north UK) for foam backing and fireproofing, then shipped to Oundle in time for the build. Real JIT stuff, actually 2 days late but Fairline kindly tolerated that. Getting it was a proper mission and huge expense, not least cos DHL sent it to Cologne rather than Accrington and then it got stuck in snow in Cologne, heck. Anyway, all was well that ended well. Boyriven who are the importer of the Maharam NY fabrics were fantastic and went way above and beyond normal service in getting this

My e/r pics are rubbish becuase my camera flash failed, sorry, but here is port side of e/room. Filters at bottom left are industrial strnegth water maker filters, and the hardware on top of genset is the water maker pump, and the 2 r/o tubes hang from ceiling. Big silver tank is domestic hot water

All the furniture on Match 2 has been de curved and made square or with 45deg facets. This for example is the box below the lower helm seat which usually has a big curve but it has been faceted. They have done this really nicely with machined sections of walnut glued flush to veneered marine ply panels - no proud or overlapping joints and no siliconed fillets. Really nice cabinet work. This will be the first properly de-curved Sq78 and I hope Fairline continue this though I'm not sure if they will

Here's the bath on the master cabin ensuite :D

Below is one of the Sleipner stabiliser actuators, under the sink/bar unit in the master cabin bathroom

Below is a general view of the master cabin, looking from port to stbd. The cardboard rectangle on the far left bulkhead is marking out the position of a 40 inch Samsung 30mm thick TV that will swing round 30deg to point towards the bed. Electrically, if I can get a mechanism to work - I'm on the case

Finally here is a general shot of stbd side

I''ll go back to factory in a few weeks and get some better engine room pics

For my F96 52" Samsung TV (now old, it was one of the very first LED TVs) there was an optional motorised wall mount, even controllable with the same TV remote!
I didn't need it for my placement, but I saw it working and it was an impressive gadget indeed, capable of rotating both horizontally and vertically.
Not sure if they still make anything similar - if not, maybe you could try to find one of those and adapt it to another TV? Just a thought, anyway.

Compliments for the new RIB dash. It's so much better than the original, that one should wonder if the builder ever gave it any thought at all.
It wouldn't have costed them one more penny, to make it that way from the start...

Thanks jfm, all looking good. Maybe I'm being a bit thick but what are r/o tubes? And in the laundry pic there are three units, a washing machine, spin dryer and ?? I do like the white caulk, good choice.

Hi jfm,

She's looking good! May I comment on keeping the horns looking really good?

Wash with clean sopay water
Use a dedicated chrome cleaner on them (never use stainless polish. Stainless polish wrecks chrome)
Once clean, use a carnuba wax (such as the 3M hard wax)

Then they'll keep looking good for a long time.

All the best - Piers & Toby

Hi Ho Silver Lining ...

.. I see Med Sun is shining!

Is it as good as it looks in the image? Definitely no hint of beige in that .... a nice improvement although the Real World will tell more I'm sure.
