Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Again simply stunning . Its been an epic read jfm . Thanks

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. LR, it's an epic write too :D :D.

We gotta support this industry though. There are thousands of guys building nice boats in this industry facing very tough markets. Guys who work in boatbuilders tend, in my experience, to be particularly passionate about what they make. Meanwhile there are hundreds of passive readers/browsers of this forum, and imho it's good that we all shout from the e-rooftops about how good boats/cruising/life on the ocean wave are.

Must feel a bit deju vu? Does that potentially dampen the excitement levels to below that of Match 1? been there 'dun it sort of thing?

Still a fabulous boat whether it's your first or tenth!!
Nah. Thing is, after a year of any boat you learn all the flaws, or things you'd just like to do differently. So it is quite a joy/privilege to do a second similar boat, at least in terms of reaching one's own verion of "just right". All the flaws (at least, imho) of Match 1 have been taken out of this boat

Not sure I'd wanna do a 3rd on the same hull though, though never say never. A rich Russian might make a nice offer at Cannes boatshow, LOL :D

That said, if multiple IPs is more fuel efficient I really couldn't care less. I'm sticking with my beautiful Cat C32s on shafts, thanks, :D :D
Oh yes, also imho fitting IPS in a boat like this doesn't make any sense, other than from an overall building cost reduction viewpoint. :D
My question was just because I'd expect also the VP claims on better fuel economy to be at least overrated, if not completely wrong.

Yep, that's the right way to do it.
In further reply to the question from Steven, normally reducing the diameter is NEVER a good idea.
You always want to have the larger possible props for any given hull/propulsion, and adjust the pitch as needed.
In this case, surely you could get the engines spinning 50rpm more by grinding the blades borders, but that would mean reaching the target through a higher props slip, which is obviously a bad idea.

THANKS FOR THAT M..... i seem to remember an articale in MBM yonks ago about "Rola" props and they used a techniqe called "cupping" (if memory serves) and i wonder if its the same on props JFM,s size?? i guess we will soon find out via the "JFM fountain of boatbuilding knowledge"...

Agreed, really enjoyed the thread, even though not made any comments, until now.

Can we look forward to Match 3???

Great news that the sea trial went so well yesterday. Everything is looking fantastic.

Are you getting the "Kirby Torch" badged up in the new style. I have to say that I would be a bit ticked off if I'd just bought one and found that I'd got the old logo-ing as a result of an IP dispute.

You jest Pete I know, but the correct answer to your question is "next few weeks". Purple uplit vases that use glass beads to split the (lumishore) light into RGB and paint RGB streaks on the saloon ceiling go in next week, followed shortly by other lighting including some with music controlled mode :-). Essential gear Pete :D

Quite agree jfm - been following you but been tres busy on the home and biz front with maga travels etc.

I ordered an LED thingy that fits on you tap and shows blue when water cold and red when water hot - that is very Match imho I assume you have these?

If not I will report once fitted when I get home next week.

Fab thread still BTW

Well said jfm. Have they erected your statue yet in Oundle? :)

You've done more than your fair share to promote a successful British boat manufacturer. And Match 2 looks fabulous, just try and get down to Dartmouth so I can see her in the fibreglass.

Rolla (with the double L) is indeed a well known builder of high performance propellers.
And cupping is a technique consisting in bending the blades edge, in its aft section, to better "grab" the water.
But it's mostly useful with stainless steel surface props, I really don't think that M2 props are cupped.

Excellent!

Not having seen your last 4 boats, I'm deffo gonna make an effort to see this one. Planning to be down at Mercury on the Friday of the 'show'.

Pete

Glad the sea trials were all good, pity it was such a gloomy day, I was working in Harwich on Wednesday and did look over the harbour a few times to see if you were there but missed you. Bet you can't wait to get all the covers off and into the sun! As the weather looks promising this weekend we're going to cruise over to Ipswich for the night so if you see a strange looking guy stalking your boat then I'm sorry but will probably be me!

It's a weird dispute, innit? I've kept the old Laser from Match 1 remember, not bought a new one for Match2. The logo is sort of screen printed on the sail so I think I'll not bother and go for the "retro" look. I reckon people will still refer to them as "Lasers" for the next 100 years anyway :D

I have not followed the IP disute in detail and dunno who is the goodie and who is the baddie in the whole thing

(Also, I think "Kirkby Torch", with the second k obviously, is liverpudlian slang for a cigarette lighter)

No doubt two sides to the story. I'd forgotten you'd kept the Laser from Match 1 and I do think there will be an element of retro chic.

Mebbe use "Kirkby Torch" as the name for the rib tender to Match 2.

Then if someone asked after the provenance of the name of the rib you could say, I wanted to keep the classic name for the Laser...

Hi Colin. Might have a spare seat on the Ipswich- Essex leg (2-3 weeks) or the Essex - Southamption leg (5 weeks). So long as you stay on the main deck there is no white carpet at all to spill a whole pot of tea on (will you ever be forgiven for this one? It was 1999 or 2000, ferchrissakes! :D)

Ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh yeeeeeessssss. Either leg is fine by me.

AND I'll make the tea for everyone. How's that for a deal. And a good trial for your stabilisers:D

For those who don't know the "tea" story, as Jfm said this would be 1999 or 2000 and he had his beautiful new boat, "Brayfart of Lymington" in Lymington and tcm and a couple of other formites were bringing a small speed boat back from Dover to the Solent. So jfm decided to be a good egg (see he was one even then :p) and meet them half way and escort them back 'cos he had "the chart plotter" and I somehow wangled my way on to the trip. Half way round the plan went a bit pete tong when sea sickness over took the speedboat skipper and they heaved to while the skip heaved too to. So we did the same, just waiting around in the swell in the Solent near Nabs Head if memory serves me well for them to get to the meeting point or call it quits and divert to Brighton - which they did in the end.

So there we are bobbing about in the Solent waiting for tcm's mob to decide to continue or not and I very kindly offered to make tea for everyone.

Down to the galley and the pot of nice strong "builders tea" is all merrily brewing away when jfm (and I'll blame him 'cos he was driving), decided to turn us round into the waves again and the boat bobbed a bit violently and somehow the whole pot of tea ended up on the boat's pristine white carpet. But it was OK, I didn't get scalded or hurt. Apart from my pride.

Oh dear oh dear said me and reported to jfm who in his inimitable way said, "oh don't worry I've got a spare carpet in the garage, don't fret over it". Nice bloke eh?

Now actually IMHO it was all jfm's fault anyway. a) for moving the boat round, b) for not having stabilisers and c) for forcing me to make the tea in first place.

Now some or none of the above may be true, but it's not a bad story but i've not been on one of his boats since.

So I promise NO tea (or coffee) this time. Will the beer fridge be stocked?:D
