Boat in build pics (2013 Fairline Squadron 78)

Lovely office indeed, way better environment than anything in the City!
Though I must say that what I loved most of "my" BA office was the position, right in front of the p/house windshield.
Not to mention the leather quality, which felt as new even if 20 yo...
Best seat in the house, imho.
I can well believe all that, having been aboard BA myself (pre refit) :-)

See? I told you that it was pointless to argue about principles, when the VdV thread was posted...
That's a clear cut case of c'est le ton qui fait la musique, if you see what I mean!
You are right MapisM, I concede. And I gotta say, respect to you for your command of the English language, ie using French expressions that we have hijacked because we didn't have a better way of saying it in English :-)

Twizzle being one of the few exceptions that prove the rule - and I bet that at RH they advised against it, anyway...

Then again, we luddites do not expect you futurist folks to understand us.
Don't get me started on "curved furniture and panels deleted and replaced by squared shapes", just as another example... :D
It is good that there are lots of differing opnions on here MapisM. We share love of the sea and being on/in/under it without any differences, and we can entertain ourselves with (mere) differences on caulking colour. Long may it continue! :D

the order is 3000k. I wanted a slightly white look,
...... if you see what I mean. What temps have you tried on BA? Do you reckon I've made a mistake here?

I know what you mean,
I've also considered and tested "cold" white on BA, as I have already much warm wood teints,
but the daylight white from Quick marine lights looks too cold, and in combination with a lo CRI, human skin looks grey and "ill"
exactly what I don't like,

at the moment I have 5 different types of led lights in the saloon of BA, for testing, and still have not made up my mind.
Actually a G4 fitting LED bulb from intalian make Dixiplay, in the original sockets looks the nicest, even better then the original halogen bulbs,
But I'm a bit reluctant to replace the old brass fittings with similar old fashion Silver fittings
Thats why I'm reading your and others comments on LED"s with much interest.

On Match2, with a modern contemporary interior, I'm quite sure that the cantalupi 3000K's will be very good.

LED light 'tuning'

Given that Match's existing underwater LEDs can change colour via a controller, would it be possble to alter the new LEDs' chromaticity according to will and external lighting conditions. Not just dimming but up and down the colour range ?

in theory yes, but from the examples of RGB lighting I've seen it will be a hell of a job to get decent rendering plus you need a seriously expensive driver for each light (or series) so it will cost way too much to make sense (imho)

Vas is right, it is very expensive to do it properly, and very bad done cheaply.

one more vote for 3K,

that's the ones I use and have already converted half a dozen 70ies luminaires to them. Work brilliantly and they are what they officially call "daylight", which is what you really really want in the Med in the evening ;)

V.

confused by that - daylight is much higher like 5000K
3000K is a tungsten lamp not dimmed too much.

Hmmm. Will be interesting to hear your final choices BartW. FWIW, I chartered a catamaran in carib last new year and it had Quick LEDs (it was a new 2012 boat) and I thought they were very good. I'd sort of give them a 8/12 score, though I'm searching for 9 or 9.5 out of 10 (10/10 being probably unrealistic in the current market.

One problem with brands (Dixiplay or whatever) is that they buy the LEDs and install them in fixtures, but the light quality is mostly dependent on the LED maker not the fixture maker. The good LED makers in this segment are Phillips, Sony and Cree, afaik, then there are dozens of chinese makers whose LEDs fixture makers can buy thru Alibaba by the container load and there will be no consistency between batches let alone high quality. So it would be good to "get behind" Dixiplay to understand what LEDs they are using, and always beware of batch inconsistency. (The spec for Match2 in cludes 6 spare light fittings from same batch, in case I have any unit failures)

I'll be delighted to show you my whole saloon lit in Cantalupi at night, next year, to help with your BA research :-)

This is going to be an epic thread. I had a few reads of the last 'Match' build using my dad's account, now I am a member I can follow this in its entirety:cool:

All the best for a smooth build, jfm,

alright,
then I will find a temporarely solution, just for the saloon only,
and wait at least 6 more months before I make a final decision to change all 120 pcs interior lights :-)

the deck and outside lights are done, and I'm happy with them,
except some UW lights are still missing :-)

....alright, then I will find a temporarely solution, just for the saloon only, and wait at least 6 more months before I make a final decision.....

I reckon we are 2-5 years away from the best LED solution but I do believe we are making excellent progress, all major lighting manufacturers such as Thorn for instance have invested heavily so we will get there. Imbedded carbon seems to be a concern, the amount of carbon expended in the manufacturing process and the supply chain. I was asked this question recently when compiling a report for the energy manager of one of the UK's major utility providers, I doscussed it with Thorn and on balance they felt it was similar to a standard luminaire.

When evaluating lighting performance we move into a very subjective area, influenced by sooo many variables other than CRI, colour temp there's occupants age/task recognition, natural/artificial mix, lighting layout/design, luminaire/controller quality/design, lens/diffuser design and of course the source/LED, etc, etc, but I must say its the end users that ultimately decide what THEY like best and dictate what is the best solution, for THEM!

JFM - I'm sure we would be delighted to welcome you again at Sant Carles marina when passing, I could give you my opinion on your luminaires, we can also seek Hurricanes opinion on your anchor camera.......;-) Now, when do we get to comment on your choice of air conditioning systems?

My two cents

Great to see the build underway, colour scheme should look fab. I'm a bit of a traditionalist with teak, so I'd go for black caulking, but I'm sure the white will look great.

i'd be really tempted to spec one of the gennies just big enough to run the stabs, fridges and boil a kettle, but make it super quiet. We rarely run the air con or heating at anchor, so we would benefit from less noise most of the time, and less fuel usage, in exchange for a bit less redundancy. I'm sure you've thought it through though.

I'll be really interested to see the LED interior lights, although I'd have a problem with them not being dimmable, or at least not having a warm yellow light when dimmed (dimmable LED's keep the same colour temperature and just reduce the light output as you know). This can be overcome to some extent with low wattage table lamps etc., but i'd still want at least the saloon and cockpit lights to be nicely dimmable.

I can see the production Guru's engineering a solution as they read this, wirelessly switching-off individual different colour temp LED elements to each source - I recall Hurricanes post on his multi-coloured LED downlighters recently fitted to his flybridge, progress don't you just love it!

Minor question, jfm. I think you had black mooring lines for Match (I'm struggling to write "Match1" without thinking of the well-known ship "Steveio1").

With the white caulking, will you revert to white lines.

I'm sorry, that wasn't an intended pun even but, as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five told us, "White lines; don't do it" :)

I am a little disappointed that nobody mentioned the scatter cushions yet :D.
This time around, you might consider opting for the blue ribbon instead of shipping her ;)
How about the new big picture windows Princess started to use ?

White caulking : undecided, a matter of taste I think.

Ah, lovely link BJB. Boatbuilding: the more you stay the more you pay... now I'm broke and it's no joke... don't buy one (a boat) :-)

Black mooring lines, fender socks, canvas covers, bimini - don't worry!

Yup but it is earmarked for Cannes show in September 2013 so come on over! I'll try to have it on S Coast UK (prob Ocean village) for enough time for forum folks to have a tour, but as you know all that depends on handover date combined with delivery-to-Med ship timing etc

I havent the intellect, let alone the time or inclination, to keep up with all the details of the thread. I did pick up on your point about the Laser instead of the Jetski though - good call!

Re the South Coast, I know somebody who runs a marina in Lymington who would be only too pleased to accommodate Match for a while, valeting service on site, easy access to plenty of fuel, happy to help out with social events, ....whatever ! ;)

Also enough new Squadrons to start an Owners Club !!

Can you please post the general arrangement dwgs, would be interesting to refer to them during the build to see what's going where in advance etc.
Hiya MYAG. Hope tropical storms are bearable!

Here are GAs that I have to hand. They are of general layout, not specific to machinery install, and may not look great in this image size (they are clickable thumbnails and photobucket offers a "zoom in" button top right).

Thanks very much Nick. Sorry to miss you last time. I only just got away from Essex with the boat finished, and had 3 days in OV before the rushed ship loading, hence no time to see lovely Lymington :-/

Cheers J, very bearable hiding out in the VIP of a 60m Feadship thanks. ;) Not so sure EME's roof will take much more though!

Thanks for posting the arrangements, great reference for when the build starts taking shape.
