Boat in build - little Viking 20.

EDIT - need to start a new thread to add more photos cos apparently I've exceeded the allowable amount per post .
Please don't start a new thread or it will spoil the continuity of this one. The pictures limit applies only per post, not per thread. There are threads on this forum with hundreds of pictures in the same thread

Deefor, on the 215 with the added platform, where does the engine go?

On the platform itself, a bit like Shetland do. The platform isn't an integral part of the hull - it's a bolt on jobbie and glassed & flaired into the hull. On the finished item, you can't see the joins. We'd looked at this model but couldn't justify the extra length on the trailer. It also puts about £1500 IIRc on the price of ours and you lose some valuable cockpit seating.

7th May 2012 - the big day :D. Up at 4.30am to be in Great Dunmow, Essex, by 8.00am. Had to hook up trailer this morning as weather was foul last night.

Got to the factory on time and boat was waiting in hoist and slings ready to be just dropped onto new trailer

As it was new trailer and never had a boat on before, we (Vinny & Wayne from Viking plus me) then spent the next three hours trying to get the boat level on the trailer and getting the correct nose weight.

Strapped the boat down, waved goodbye and set of on the 80 mile trip home. Weather was great for 30 miles and then the heavens opened on the M25. The hood, although it's fine in 50 mph dry, twoing conditions, ain't designed to take a 50mph rain lashed gale :o.

Finally got home only to find the cockpit carpet and upholstery soaked due to the driving rain. Note to self - if rain is forecast, sort out the cockpit before setting off :o.

Only pics we got due to the time spent loading the boat are one before we left and one when we got home - sorry.

Limit is per post (20 I think incl smilies!) not per thread so you can keep going :D

The anticipation is building... :D:D:D

Edit: beaten to it by JFM ;)

That's what I thought, will have another look. Take 2 coming....

Ahh, that explains it. Your pics are uploaded to this website's server, and you are only allowed 1Mb. Hence the message. It is much better to upload the pics (from now on) to photobucket, and hot link to them when posting here. Then you have no 1Mb limit. Plus, the pictures display full size without having to be clicked. You'll have to invest 20mins setting up a photobucket account though, and learning how to create the links (which it does automatically, all very easy). Good luck! Shout if you need more help

Thanks Jim. Last used PB a long, long time ago so will have to spend a bit of time getting accquainted with it again.

Work beckons again now but first I'll get some pics of the finished boat taken on the camera - work can wait a while :D.

Thanks for your patience guys.

Woohoo, PB works.

Before we left, no boat

Then we got back some hours later and trailer now has a close friend :D.

27th May 2012 - maiden voyage time. A simple weekend from MDL Penton Hook at Chertsey to MDAL Windsor and back again with just the one night onboard at Windsor.

Arrived at Penton Hook at 6.30am, unstrapped boat, rigged fenders and lines, reversed down slipway, pushed boat off trailer, moored boat next to slipway, parked car and trailer and 45 minutes later I was sitting on our new boat having coffee.

Recovery takes about an hour as the boat needs to be dead straight on the trailer and the need to manually winch 1.5 tons of boat up hill.

Here she is sitting in the water at Penton Hook, ready to go.

On arrival at Windsor, noticed that we're listing to starboard with no one on board. Time to play around with weight distribution, ie. move beer and wine to port side.

After two days, nothing fell off, nothing broke and the weather was glorious. Only downside was that we used 1 litre of petrol every hour .

Deefor, try

1. hover mouse and tick all those photos as you view them in your photobucket album.
2. Then go to bottom of page and "choose action"
3. Select "generate link code"
4. In the window that pops up, choose "IMG full size". Left click and all the code is copied.
5. Paste into a post on here and pics display. Type in you text between the IMG code for the pics, if you want to separate the pics with text.
Job done!

Since 27th May 2012, we've had another five consecutive days away and one or two issues have cropped up. More on these later.

What I haven't done yet is taken some pics of the finished boat, both inside and out.

To complete the "boat in build" thread, I'll also let you know how the issues/problems have been dealt with to date.

Thanks for looking and reading :).

Thanks Jim, got the hang of it now. Just need to take some more pics and get them uploaded. Time and weather is now against me, even though the boat is sitting only 10m away from me.

QUOTE]

If you are going to trail the boat on a regular basis its much better to get a tonneau cover made, if you leave the cockpit covers up they wont last long :(

When recovering the boat on the trailer, let the engine and the trailer do the work. Simply drive the boat onto the trailer, the SBS roller trailers are self centering and the boat will find the correct position all by its self. You should only need to winch the last foot or so.

Boat looks great, it does look to pack a huge amount into a compact hull. Its nice to know that the more affordable end of British boat building is still alive and well.

Whats the slipway like at Penton Hook ? Wouldnt mind giving it a go if its OK.

Yes, we've looked at tonneau covers but although I'm convinced they're very worthwhile when towing, I'm still pondering over what to do when we arrive and depart the slipway.

Say it's raining on arrival, wet tonneau has to come off (store in car?) and proper canopy has to be erected in the rain, all the time trying to stop the cockpit woodwork getting wet.

Likewise on departure, remove wet proper canopy (store in cockpit til we get home?), refit the damp tonneau from a few days before, again trying to keep the cockpit dry.

I've toyed with the idea of simply lashing a tarp over the canopy and screen or even getting an "over hood" made. There will come a time in the future when the boat will be kept in the water but this is years rather than months away.

Our SBS traier isn't a swing beam roller type but basically a keel roller type with side rollers instead of fixed carpet bunks. Went for this design as the V20 has quite a pronounced keel and there wouldn't have been enough depth on a swing beam to accommodate the V20's skeg/keel. I've since discovered that the hull layup from the skeg outwards isn't the thickest and I'd be very wary about letting a V20 sit soley on swing beam rollers.

Penton slipway - quite a steep approach down to the waters edge but then levels out. Waiting/mooring pontoon on both sides of slipway. Some big lumps of concrete submerged at the edge of the slip but can be avoided with the trailer wheels. Secure parking for car and trailer. £15 a day IIRC to launc, recover and parking for car and trailer - a bargain really.

Next time I'm down that way, I'll get some pics of the lie of the land.

Have you sorted photobucket yet?

I am impatiently awaiting these other photos.

Great boat and thread:cool:

Very smart! I much prefer your bathing platform arrangement to the other boat in the photo; that GRP "bolt-on" looked way too bulky for the boat. I'm surprised that the supports on your boat for the platform aren't the other way up though so that they push up against the downard force?

The interior of Viking has improved considerably since my 1990 vintage version; see here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/64249185/1234_0028.jpg

I ain't taken them yet :o.

1) need to charge camera battery, 2) boat needs a clean inside and out, 3) it's raining.

Hope to get pics taken tonight or tomorrow if weather's good.

I did wonder about the bathing platform support legs but I know there's a reason. Will find out in due course.

Interior - in some areas it's improved but in others it's taken a step backwards. The interior photos, when I get them taken, will explain more ;).

Hi Deefor, as others have said, what great interior space for a 20footer!! My office is pretty local to Penton Hook so will look out for you

in the meantime to save you some time can I recommend a pair of these..

Yep, I like them Floatem poles and had looked at them as soon as we got the new trailer. Need to convince SWMBO that they're "essential". I feel an early birthday present coming on (August ;)).
