I saw a proposal a while back suggesting a nationwide port blockade to show strong feeling towards the fuel price hikes (both Red diesel and road fuel) – Road blockades of Airports and Ferry ports and Sea blockade of harbour entrances. Does anyone know if this has moved on further? I would definitely be up for a protest blockading our harbour.

Any other thoughts?

the difference is that the excess is going to the oil company and/or the marina. in future it will be going to support the govt.

I think I would avoid at all costs making the general public aware that boatowners use untaxed diesel in pleasure boats. Especially if you blockade a port and inconvenience the holidaying British Public - it would completely backfire.

If Mr Average knew that someone who had spent £100k on a boat was benefitting from a tax break that he doesn't himself get in his Ford Focus diesel estate there would be an immediate mandate for the Government to rectify what would be seen as a "tax loophole" for the wealthy pleasure seeker. That might not be the reality, but I'm sure that is how it would be seen.

I thought the fuel tax was supposed to pay for road improvements? I have bumped into the shore a few times but never have I had the pleasure of circumnavigating the M25 on my boat.

What made you think that fuel tax went for road improvements? Tax is tax is tax is tax ad infinitum I am afriad. That's the anomaly with National Insurance, which, because it is not called "tax", people imagine it is not tax - which of course it is! Some people imagine that NI is funding the national pension fund - nothing could be less true - NI goes directly general taxation.

"If it encourages us to make the most of what we have all the better.”

Good argument but does'ent take in to account that everywhere else in the world, their fuel is cheaper than ours!!!!

I'm also with Robhi, Rip-Off Britain is alive and well with the chief rippers-off in Downing Street, but we still enjoy an advantage that others do not enjoy and boat owners are already a target group - we don't need to exacerbate matters.

Hi All,
I allways thought we had red diesel and D.E.R.V. What happens when we are banned from using red diesel, and have to use white that is taxed for road vehicles. Can we claim a tax rebate as I'm sure my boat wont congest any roads and I've not seen a tax disc for boats YET?!.

The Idea for increasing the tax on red was to bring the taxation into line with europe, which would mean reduction of tax on white diesel, will it happen I think not. Usual British Government policy keep the bits of legislation that collects tax and bin the rest.

I'm glad my grand parents aren't around to see how we lie down and take it both from the money grabbers in Westminster and holyrood as well as from europe.

Cheers Adam
