Proof that the vendor owns the boat
Some sort of evidence that there is no outstanding finance on the boat.
You may also like to see evidence of maintainance, users manuals and the original VAT invoice. Recent boats will have an HIN number ( usually starboard transom area ) which should assist in confirming its model year and month of manufacture.
pinnacle is correct, you can down load the bill of sale document from the mca web site if you are buying the craft private. Get as much info as you can the original bill of sale will show VAT paid.
Make sure if there is a certificate for registry that is held with the MCA it will help when re-registring the boat or if you want to change the name or port.
Just completed mine and will be issued with a new cert next week.
have a look on RYA pages and the brokers association -YBDSA or something.
Its a good idea to understand the brokers role, and his responsibilities. And what happens if he runs off with your money.Ok thats a bit unfair.. but you can be a broker yourself tomorrow if you want. There's no insurance liability, exams etc required, and there are good, ok and lousy ones.
If you want to go full hog, and thats not necessary, then dont take his word for anything, dont pay him anything unless its full escrow accounts, see ALL documentation (funny, I m sure I had it here somewhere etc). On the other hand plenty of people do business on the shake of a hand.. find your own path, but do so deliberately, not in ignorance. Just remember these are tough times for small business, so be confident who has your money.
