I'm looking at boats around the £20,000 mark. and am most likely to purchase via a private sale. How can I be sure that there is no outstanding loan or unpaid credit arrangements,or is it all down to trusting the seller (its a lot of money) or do I have any kind of protection when buying through a broker?

Either buy through a broker or take out a MARINE mortgage through one of the reputable marine finance companies - they will do the necessary

Sorry to be so tardy in replying - I only just remembered to check how this thread progressed. The Transcript only applies to Part 1 reg as far as I know but I'm no expert. I suggest you give Gill Andrews at the Ships Registry a call. She was helpful to me recently. Her direct line is 029 2044 8848 according to my latest letter from her. Do let us know how you get on.
