Ex servicemen can fly a non defaced bluey and realistically there is no great kudos in flying anythig at all that needs to be defaced before consumption by the eyes of the beholder. Nothing at all wrong with the red duster shame we cant fly a white one though ( RN get a bit sniffy at such things )...

No they can't, they like all other mortals need to have a suitable vessel, be a member of the appropriate club and get their warrant. Only the RNSA has an undefaced blue, the pongo's one is defaced and the crabs have a defaced light blue. As an aside the RNLI is quite happy to fly a defaced red.

Nothing interesting to me on the forum this rainy day so I thought a little mischief was appropriate.

In keeping with the latest trend of finding a really old thread and commenting on it I thought it would be good to make it one about flags, thus committing two sins in one.

I intend to campaign for compulsory breath testing equipment on yachts, for the fitting of AIS to all vessels over 2m in length, and for the banning of all boats not made in Britain or that are found to be carrying contraband tinned pies, portapotties, plastic glasses or bad wine.

Particularly if the skipper is called Dylan.

There is a guy near us in the marina who could cause even more trouble on here.

His BLUE Ensign has an ANCHOR on it.

But I havent been able to tell what type it is or if it would bend and drag.

Does not matter what the colour is but I wish Brits would stop flying small sized ensigns. Are you just tight? Go for the biggest ensign you can find and be proud!!!

Saw them on the rack at the chandlers for 14.95. (Maybe they had white ones under the counter - must ask next time the shop's empty.)

I've just bought a French flag for €2.50. Correction - they threw it in for free with the rest of the order.

Not so; the flag is always where the ship is registered. You are implying that a boat may change its flag in international waters. If it is found to be flying two different flags, it is considered to be flagless with all the risks that this can give rise to.

In the days of the Red, White and Blue Squadrons when the Navy (had some ships and) flew ensigns appropriate to the Squadron there was a Yellow Squadron - for those sick on shore Think in those times the Red was the senior Squadron.

Not being British i am always flabbergasted by your fierce discussions about and sensitivity on flags, ensigns and burgees.
And ho now, dont give me anything about not having traditions and such or i'll be forced to remind you of a certain chain near Chatham.

But seriously, when i am coming -which perhaps i should not after the above- what textile should i fly and where besides the Dutch national on the stern.

Does it really look that odd to you? Do you not have any social divisions in Holland? Are there no upper classes and no lower classes for want of a better way to put it? There are such divisions in other countries including the USA so I would have thought thatthere were in Holland. And all the blue ensign arguments are about is social class and the resentment of many people against any display of difference.

And whats this about a chain?

As for visiting the UK, fly what you want. We might argue about the colour of the flags but unlike Holland we can ignore most rules with impunity - no one bothers to enforce them

Not if you try to buy white diesel at a service station on the Orwell! They try to enforce rules that don't exist. I could have a blue ensign but don't because I can't be bothered with the paperwork and am too lazy to aspire to belong to any class. I just want to sail for pleasure not make a social statement if that's what flying a blue ensign does.

Hold on a minute Nostrodamus........I witnessed (an obviously very proud of their sparkly new 36 ft boat couple) at the weekend flying an ensign the size of garage door.

In heavy weather it would need to be lashed to the pushpit or stored below!
