Blackwater to Oostende

The straight line is LSH > Oostende
The curved line is actual course
Had the tide been 12hrs different the curve would be to the S/W of the straight line
If 6 hrs different then an S shaped course with 1/2 the XTE

My brain freezes when I try and do reciprocals in the heat of the moment, why didn't I think of that?

Simple to take off 200 and add 20 for bigger bearings.

Ta, made my day.

My day job was controlling fast jets in combat - reciprocals were key to woking out a course to intercept so needed to be able to work them out whilst planning a strategy to protect the high value unit

I have to admit to 100% success maintaining peace - no wars on my watch!

As for other comments about keeping it simple - and why not!!

Thanks for the responses.

My Plan is to leave HW at Blackwater at approx mid afternoon to make the turn at LSH by sunset. The start of the flooding tide will give me a boost acrossed the TSS heading 130 towards West Hinder shipping channel for the small dogleg crossing before the final toward oostende. As for coming back that will be via Alderney to Brighton so a different story there.

If anyone else plans on heading over there in May let me know, two boats (or more) are better seen than one.

Cheers

We did the Channel last year, so this is our year for turning left. I assume that you will be returning via Cherbourg. This will give you a lot more tide with you than trying to do it in one hop. The 90 miles from Cherbourg to Brighton ought to take eighteen hours at five knots but if you get the tide right you will do it in about sixteen.

By all means set out with friends, but don't set your heart on staying in touch with them visually. Radio contact is more likely to work out well for all concerned.

So true.... I don't think I've ever managed to complete a north sea crossing in company with visual contact maintained!..... including one memorable, rather boistrous one, when we lost visual contact with CliveG right upto and including his masthead as he disappeared into the troughs, even though he was only 300yds away! :D

That 15m swell must have been impressive.

My main reason for giving this advice is that few groups or pairs of boats sail at the same speed and trying to stay together tends to leave one boat having to slow down, or another boat trying to press on and possibly making unseamanlike decisions.

I have actually achieved continuous contact on one or two occasions, both to Flushing and the Roompot, but the understanding has always been that each skipper makes his own decisions.

More like 4m, but still fun!
