I am looking to buy a Seastream 34 which appears to have everything I need for a forthcoming summer long trip in the Med, apart from the fact it has a black hull. Does anyone have information as to how this will affect either, A: the boat itself or, B: the living conditions on board (e.g. increased internal temperatures etc.) Thanks in advance.

have friends who are living aboard a black-hulled steel boat in the caribbean. they have no complaints. it's the colour of the decks that really matters.

their website is <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.yachtanju.com>http://www.yachtanju.com</A>

Watch out for increased glare from white decks - grey are more restful and probably reflect nearly as much heat.

Had white decks, painted them nonglare. All decks in the south get too hot for human feet, the colour merely makes it happen sooner. Buckets of seawater
cure it.

Plenty of replies on the effect on the occupants, but not so many on the effect on the boat. If you root around on David Pascoe's Yacht Survey site you will find that he thinks that dark colours are not appropriate for the Florida climate, which I guess is similar to the Mediterranean one. In mid summer the GRP just gets too hot to be good for it, and is especially detremental if you have a foam cored hull. I have no experience of this myself, it's just what I read. Find the site here...

We are a green hull and have just paid to have it taken back to the gel; coat and then painted WHITE. This will reflect a lot of the heat that comes through the hull. We have fawn treadmaster on the decks which is too hot to walk on in summer so good lady uses mooring lines in coils as stepping stones.

We painted cockpit area white, non slip, and that has worked very well, but don't fancy the task of keeping the whole deck area clean is we went white.

You are going to get warm and if you face it, that is one of the reasons for going there.
