Could be a cracked distributor cap, or condenser if your motor is pre electronic ignition. Used to have a boat with a marinised Rover V8, wouldnt start after winter layup, replaced the entire electronic ignition system, tried dizzy cap as a last resort, hey presto, couldnt see a mark or crack on the old one anywhere but must have been shorting somewhere. Cost eletronic ignition £150 dizzy cap £12 , try the cheap options first . Also try waggling throttle lever ,stern drives often have a system which cuts out a few cylinders as you engage astern (to lower revs for a smooth gear engagement) if this has stuck in cut out position theres no way the blasted thing will start, worth a try, this also happened to me

I know this may sound stupid but is the boat in gear.

Try moving gear shift to make sure its in neutral.

This can have the same effect as a kill switch

Damp plugs particularly if the engine was first not run up to temp. With my old petrol lump I used to heat the tips up on the gas stove. Allways started with hot plugs and flooded boores. Dave.

My father told me, musta been 30 years ago now, that if you pour some petrol on a distributor cap, any cracks will show up clearly.

Never needed to try it, but I see no reason to disbelieve him.

glad to see there is another upper Itchen boater on the forum! When you do eventualy get your boat up there give us a wave as you pass, we are moored on the left between Northam and Cobden Bridges, as you come under Northam and look ahead on the left there is a newish block of flats with moorings, we are just there so you will pass us each time you go in and out!

Which yard is it you are going to be in? If you are ever passing and we are on Bacchus (mooring nearest the shore) pop over and say hi (only when the tide is in though! That goes for any of you lot, there is always a spare space in the moorings to stop for a while.
