Biscay in mid-September

The shipping forecast is far too vague, so is navtex, I am sorry to harp on about it, but, reading of synoptics is a. not rocket science, b. easy to rx, c. readily available.
Use the technology. (IMHO) of course !

[/ QUOTE ] I'm beginning to wonder how I survived all those crossings in my youth when all I could hear was "Bisc**, Fin**ter**, West f**ce *!* veer*** qqq th* Sclub ****, Fog".

Bit like my navtex more recently when the aerial feed failed . . .

They were good days - crackling radio - trying to write down the pressures and draw a chart ones self... midnight listening to the forecast to catch the tide at 04.00... so much more fun than all these electronics.

All info re weather comes out of a few computers but its the way it is presented and I think Bouyweather presents it well for people who are doing a long passage and they will be able to do the passage as a freeby as Buoyweather offers the first month FOC

Exactly, Jim. I am sitting in Almerimar waiting to get off to Gib. The Buoyweather system using the Med model and GFS shows around 15kts at this point on the coast. The Spanish Met Office is giving 5 gusting 6 and Germany is giving 7 gusting 9 for sea area Alboran (and it will be much windier farther south from Almerimar). We are seeing, in the harbour, 25kts gusting 35 kts.

You are right, the presentation is irrelevant unless the forecast is good. The human forecasters have got it right and the machine is a long way out.

Exactly Jim, it is not predictable, it is better than it used to be though. Best way is still to get the ´now´synoptic and decide for yourself. Satphones are good but expensive, we have better things to do with our limited budget, ssb is easy, and relatively cheap. Navtex is ok, but only ok, imho. Too vague, Finisterre for example is one huge area. Lots of great info in this thread generally.
I think to sum up, for my point of view, look at the time of year, read the relevent info ie world cruising routes (Cornell) and Ocean passages (BA). then plan accordingly. As said before, the original post time of year can be on of the most problematic. Get all the info en route that you can get, and interpret. Above all enjoy. if the time isnt right for one persons experience level, cool, go another time.

[/ QUOTE ] They work by suppressing elements of your nervous system - crudely - putting bits (or lots) to sleep. You'll note the 'don't operate heavy machinery' warnings on some. I guess leisure yachts count as light machinery . . . .

Are you talking about motoring south, as we are returning to UK, does that mean we will have good sailing wind behind us?
