A journalist did the single handed transat in a biscay 36. He's Paul Heiney (spelling?) & married to Libby Purves, the YM contributor. I think he had a web site for the Transat, so there may be an archive. If not, if memory serves, they were built in cornwall at what is now Falmouth Boat Construction. They might have some info. Hope that's of some use.

Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/biscay36/ and feel free to join. Not many members, and not many photos yet but a couple of owners happy to talk about this classic design.

PS I'm not sure if you can join just by going to the site, so send me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send an invitation. (not very good at this technical stuff)

Re: Biscay 36

Have a look at the Cygnus Marine website (Google will find it) as they have some photos, line drawings and (I think) excerpts from the original brochure. THe YM A-Z of Boats also featured line drawing and basic spec.

In short, they are built on an Alan Hill designed long-keeled hull with a choice of sloop or ketch rig. They are excellent sea-boats, although without the agility of the modern fin keeled equivalents. Handling under power in confined spaces is an acquired art - I'll let you know when I acquire it!!!
I have been aboard 6 or 8 and they are nearly all different, but "standard" layout is V-berth forward, heads compartment with lockers opposite, settee berths in the saloon with a pilot bert to port, galley to port at the foot of the companionway, chart table to starboard with a quarterberth aft of that. They are all wheel steered and have clear, almost flush, decks forward of the mast. After 20,000 nm in mine, I have no plans to change so the class must have its good points! I've sent you a PM with my contact details should you wish to pick my brains.
