Binoculars

That is absolutely shockingly bad customer service from Canon. The OP has the binoculars around 10 years so presumably purchased new circa 2008 and Canon stopped producing spares for them only 4 years later. OP may not require a spare part - he's looking for a solution to stickiness but no effort made to address this issue in their reply.

the joy of just in time supply for production lines.. end the production, there is no wastage (or spare parts!)

...and spare parts...I mean who in their right mind wants to fix anything??!! Just throw away and buy new!

(modern 1st world philosophy... not mine!)

...Maybe time to change brand if talcum powder doesn't work!

Easy solution without the mess of talcum powder is to wrap the grips with gaffer tape. Choice of colours, plus the woodland camo patterns the bird watchers use on their gear.

If you are going to do this, it's better not to use 'gaffer tape', get hold of some of this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Scap...Cloth-Sniper-Tape-50-Metre-Roll-/281425500817

It doesn't necessarily look very elegant but it sticks well and has a matt surface which provides a much better grip than normal commercial 'gaffar' tapes.

When they first started becoming sticky we used duck tape. But more and more ended up being covered. Not really a problem, but now the eye cups are sticky which makes them really nasty to use. Maybe it's time to find a birthday somewhere and bite the bullet for the Fujinon.

Thanks for all the advice and help. Be seeing you - stabilised, of course....

Practical Boat Owner did binocular tests in their magazine, 21st September 2016. Admit this is a while ago but could be helpful. Results of tests can be found online. FWIW....I purchased Fujinon binos around 15 years ago. Non stabilised/no compass......just basic. They have been, and still are, superb.

I had a Steiner Commander until I bought a pair of almost new stabilized Fujinon binoculars relatively cheap on the Internet , the old guy got them as a gift a couple years before for birdwatching but lucky for me the hobby never took off for him. I never used the Steiner again after that and sold them to a boat neighbor at the marina last year.

OK, so not only this forum, but the Tralwer forum, reckon the Fujinon 14 x 40 are the undisputed winners. So, now to find the best source.

I see them available in the US at $999.95, but in the UK and Amazon, the best I can find is around £1,200. Anyone find/found better?

Thank you!

I’ve been following the thread on Trawler Forum as well and I’m tempted. I’m going to New York in January so it’s decision time. I’m a bit concerned about them being heavy so I want to actually hold them and use them before I part with a grand.

Just been told a belated Christnmas present is on its way. Fujinon 14x40 stabi. So excited!
Congratulations and May you have many happy years of use out of them. Let us know what you think of them please - I won’t be buying until 3rd week of January.

New Fujinon 14x40 Stabi binoculars have arrived and they are just brilliant. So pleased with them. Yes, a bit heavier than the smaller Canon we had, but that's really not an issue.

Bought from a new company to Amazon, mazzeonautica. Service was exceptional. No connection, just so pleased to find a company with customer service at its heart.

Thanks for the feedback. I had a quick look at a pair in B&H in New York today. Definitely felt a bit heavy and bulky. I was a bit caught for time so I’m going back again next week for a better look. $999 + around $100 sales tax so well priced and some gizmo attachment for taking photos with a smart phone included as a gift.

My Canon stabilised binos are one of the best thing I've ever purchased boat related so am a total convert. I test drove a pair of Fujinon stabilised Binos at Düsseldorf and can confirm they work very well.

Henry :)
