I am thinking of attaching a plastic NASA type pod to the top of the binnacle to take the Autohelm control panel and a GPS Repeater.
The wiring to these would have to be lead up one of the Tubular support legs - past the Compass. It will probably be within 4 inches of this instrument.
I am concerned that this will cause excessive deviation to the compass, would running the cables inside a Stainless Steel 316 (Non magnetic) conduit screen the leads? Would the instruments themselves interfere with the compass?

Has anyone any experiance with this type of set up?
Should I be concerned?

most modern plasicy boats with binnacles ,ie Bav etc.have the same suituation
i have tried on my bqav. to get deviation readings with instruments on and off
and get exactly same readings. I don't think you have a problem ......

Hi ..I put cables up thru my binnacle post ..for autopilot, horn and anchor switch..No noticable affect at all. I had the same thoughts though before i fitted them , so i taped the cables up the outside just to test system..Will say this..make shure there are no sharp edges anywhere as vibration from engiine soon does damage on entry/exit from post...

Hi Dknight.
You should have no problems provided the cable is twisted, this will reduce the magnetic field produced when current flows, and the same applies when running a backlight to your compass.
