Just back from 5 super weeks in South Brittany so what's the hot gossip?

Not a lot seems to have changed, we could even hear Solent CG giving continuous radio checks on Ch 16 as far away as Le Raz de Sein! Certainly the madhouse that is Poole entrance on a hot summer afternoon was the same as we came in yesterday, one fast ferry outbound crossing at bar buoy with another inbound, most considerate of them I thought to do that so the jetskis could harass one out and have another to go straight back with. Poole HMs (1 launch, 1 RIB) sitting in the entrance ignoring everything surely they saw the jetski amongst the swimmers in Shell Bay or maybe it was teabreak time?

Heard a frightenening exchange in the lanes mid channel between 2 merchant vessels, one very angry Dutch Captain slating another from who knows where who spoke it seemed only gutter English (mostly words starting with F) and who refused to alter course to comply with the rules and to avoid an imminent collision. French CG and Jobourg Traffic Control agreed with the Dutch Captain but did not call the other ship themselves though kindly offering to process any report filed. The Dutch guy seemed to think the other watch officer would find more suitable employment for his skills in cutting trees in the forest......

Gave way to 4 boats on starboard in Chenal Du Four only to find them motorsailing all sails set (1 Brit. I Norwegian and 2 French) and had to alter course for another (Brit) on port tack to our starboard tack mid-channel yesterday only to find he had an engine running as well as not knowing the right of way rules, though he did give a cheery wave! Grrrh!!!

Not much, although I gather from some of the other threads that there is some debate about colregs, pot buoys, powerboats and ferries.

Now there's a surprise :)

I, too, was in the same area as you and had a fine time too.

Hi Chris, we saw Rival Spirit going into Crouesty - then 10 minutes later saw her going out again, so I guess you just went in for fuel, we were in the first basin starboard side waving madly. How was the fishing? We had some luck but need I suspect to try harder to be in the right place at the right time rather than expect the fish to work to our schedule! We did catch some BIG mackerel on the way into Glenans (and something bigger snatched 2 with the hooks/feathers as well!), on the BBQ within 45 minutes, plus we some small bass off the Morgat visitors pontoon that cooked up nicely . Tried drifting in the Raz as the wind vanished but only had mackerel, same story last Friday in Alderney Race.

Did you hear about the mini tornado on Houat? We left just before and read about it next day in the Telegram, then met a French yacht who saw us at anchor and asked if we had stayed (we went back to Crouesty in view of the thunderstorms), they did stay and were knocked flat in the big anchorage, off the old harbour ruins.

We managed unusually to sail almost all the way home from the Morbihan, just 6 hours of donking, 2 around the Raz, 3 Perros to St Peter Port and 1 last night as the wind died off Poole. The weather was strange, none of the usual NE winds and lots of rain though fortune smiled on us as the black clouds seemed to be avoiding us or we arrived just after and left just before!

Yes, we were getting fuel and sorry that I missed you.

Didn't catch a single fish although did manage to lose all my tackle on something that grabbed the lot.

Didn't hear about the bad weather although we got 35 knots from the W all the way from Treguier to St. Peter Port.

Glad to hear that you had a good time.

You might like to be aware that we are still planning a Scuttlebutt meet in Cherbourg on Saturday 25th September. We have been waiting for Kim to set up a seperate forum so we can make all meal arrangements etc, without clogging up S'butt. However Kim has been away, and there were some software problems on ybw.com over the weekend, so he is trying to resolve it today.

Meal will be arranged - all other plans are down to individual skippers.

Watch this space

We must have decided on dinner in La Trinite when you were on your way from Treguier, we had double lines on with rubber snubbers in both bowlines on the visitor pontoons! The Telegram next day gave the wind gusts around the area as around 120kph from the Morbihan round to Roscoff

Yes thanks again for the fishing tips! SWMBO says I'm now addicted to spending money in fishing shops as well as chandlers since I bought lots of goodies in the Maritime Cooperatives. I notice they sell longlines ready made (need weights and buoys though) for about £30 upwards and with Bass over there at £20/kg that seemed like a good earner, but I was reminded of my comments about 'bloody pot markers everywhere'.... The bass we bought in St Peter Port was half the price of French ones at £5/lb versus £20/kg, but it was still locally caught fish and not farmed, pretty good it was though and I did the cooking too - 2 big fillets sauteed in Brittany sea salted butter with mushrooms, asparagus baby new potatoes, carrots and runner beans......I need another holiday NOW!
