Just wanted to say a big thankyou to everyone on here who took the time (and had the patience) to give invaluable advice to a complete newbie who at the time didn't know her port from starboard and thought 'draft' was something on tap in the pub!
With your advice in mind (where to go, who to see, what to look out for etc), I am pleased to say we have now almost completed our first purchase...a Monterey 218 and in my humble and inexperienced opinion, she's BRILLIANT and we can't wait to get out there!! (Well, maybe just sit in her on the mooring til we find the balls to actually let the ropes go!!)

Anyway, thankyou, thankyou all once again. And I apologise in advance for the many mistakes we are bound to make whilst on the water  OH and for anybody reading this who is at the same stage as us...meet ya on that elusive sandbank!!;)

Congrats on the new boat!

I'm only a bit further down the road than you after a long break away from boats.

A professional skipper gave me some good advice...have as much training as you can get your hands on...it's not for you, it's for others on your boat.

I went down the Day Skipper route as I didn't have anyone handy to show me the ropes and I must admit the stuff you learn is very...very helpful...you may not wish to go straight for DS, but any RYA training you can get your hands on, can only help you!!

Plus discounts on insurance!!

I look forward to seeing some photos of your future trips!

Great news, look forward to seeing pics !

Ignore my previous reply to another thread asking how you got on, i was a week behind and going through 6 pages, i should have waited until i'd read them all lol ;)

If you need any advice when out on the water just approach any Sailing Boat (the ones with the Tall stick carrying sails) and whilst circling them closely at high speed shout your questions accross. To aid communication use plenty of hand gestures. You will soon attract their attention. and you may even learn some new nautical expressions.

That approach also works when both Sailing and Motor boats are at Anchor, especially around dinner time. The trick is to catch their attention, see.

Indeed, owners of bigger Motorboats with large bathing platforms are usually only too happy for you to moor up to their sterns for the day. Bring a BBQ. and some freinds
