Beta marine BZ482 Belt

Have you got a "standard" vee belt, and are you going through them at a fair old rate?

I had this problem when I bought Rowana and fitted uprated domestic batteries.

Beta do a conversion to the modern "polyvee" belt, and I've had not the slightest bother since I fitted it. It consists of 3 pulleys - One for the crankshaft which just slips over the original and is secured with 3 bolts into the original pulley. The second pulley replaces the one on the water pump by simply removing the original and bolting on the new one. The 3rd one replaces the alternator pulley, and I did have to remove the alternator to the bench in order to get the old one off. There is also new tensioning brackets and various spacers to get the alternator to alingn with the new pulleys which was a bit of a jigsaw puzzle to get right. Once it's all in place and tensioned, it works great.

Before the modification, a belt would last 3 or 4 months, but I've never replaced the new belt once in 2 or 3 seasons.

I have some photos somewhere which I can dig out for you.

Hi,
That sounds like somthing i may have to do then, I've only just got the enigine second hand out of a vega on the west coast and it came with no belts, im in the middle of the install and trying to get the last few bits n pieces.
I guess for now i may try the set up as it is and see how i get on once up and running, if i run into the problems you mention i will certainly do the upgrade, but im not sure which belts it requires.

regards

scott
p.s. a picture would be great if you can be bothered!

Can't for the life of me remember what the belt number was on the old sat-up, but the Beta part number is 600-63080, assuming you have the standard 40Amp alternator. I would have thought someone would have an equivalent number for a car-type belt. I'm sure I "disposed" my old spare belt, but I'm going up to Peterhead tomorrow so I'll have a look in the engine spares locker.

Anyway, here's a couple of photos -

Belt before - You will clearly see the black belt dust round the alternator

Belt after -

You will clearly see the new pulleys and the new tensioning arrangement above the alternator.

Hope this helps!

Years ago I was involved in an industrial situation that required a Vee belt drive with very little available space. We started out with an SPA belt drive and the belts only lasted about 3 months before disintegrating. We then fitted Fenner Cogged Raw Edge belts which lasted over a year which was considered acceptable.
