Beta engine breakdown in the clyde !

Top... always bleed from the highest point

the bolt right on the top... loosen it off a bit, then push the big black button which is a hand pump to push out any air in the system. When no more air is coming out, tighten bolt again.

Ah!Was wondering what that black thing was!
Thanks

There's a fuel lift pump which is operated by the engine which also has a manual button/lever. Each time you press it you "lift" fuel from the pipe into the fuel filter. When fuel, not air, starts coming out the bleed screw the filter reservoir is full.
Boat ownership is fun.:encouragement:

I've changed secondary filter
Fuel that drained out had a couple of black specs in it but otherwise looked clean to me ?
How long do you have to pump the lift pumo lever for ? Been pumping for ages but no fuel is coming out - engine bleed screw is open
Thanks

If the lift pump won't deliver after pumping for a while, try turning the crankshaft about one turn. This will move the pump cam which might be stopping the hand operation.

Hi early bird
What does turning the crankshaft 1 turn actually mean - do i start the engine with a key? Thanks

Also found primary filter and have replaced and bled it. Still can't get fuel to bleed through the screw at the engine though
Cheers

You should be able to feel the pump actually pumping when you operate the little lever. If the lever feels floppy with little resistance you need to turn the engine over a little bit .... either a spanner on the crankshaft pulley nut or a quick blip using the starter motor, and then try again with the lever.

Finally got fuel to bleed through the screw. Engine wired up and died but it's now been running for about half an hour at 3/4 revs and seems fine!
Thanks every one

Should I fill up with fuel before we leave? Perhaps less chance of getting dirt in the filter ?

I wasn't planning on draining/cleaning the tank /hoses today, but rather to do it over the winter. I can't seem to drain the tank - fuel would need to be pumped out.

Not sure about the Beta fuel pump as I only have experience of Yanmars but there is quite a bit of travel on the pump lever before the last wee bit of resistance for the final few degrees. This is the bit that pumps. also make sure the bleed screw on the top of the secondary filter is closed otherwise you are drawing and pumping air.

Keep going, it's all part of the fun of sailing!:encouragement:

Yeah I'm not actually sure I was pumping it properly to begin with Chris I.e. not pushing down quite hard enough. Anyway fuel came through in the end !

Yeah changed them both downwest, found the otjer filter.

Cheers

If you can change the primary filter before you set off, do. It is the one most likely to be blocked. Worth waiting for.

Not if the globs / slugs in the tank are too large to enter the stack & just temp seal the stack pipe, engine stops, vacuum ceases & the slug falls away.
I have the tee shirt

Further to my tale of woe in #29:
Having decided my tank was suspect I got a 20litre can of nice clean diesel and a length of rubber hose and connected it to the engine. The engine wouldn't start... I heard a "hiss" as I disconnected the copper fuel line - presumably air being drawn in due to the negative pressure generated by the fuel lift pump.

This was a "Get me home from Rhu to Largs" measure, but I learned something useful which should have been obvious.
Twenty litres isn't very much, since about half the diesel drawn from the can was being "returned" to the main tank. The can felt awfully light passing Kip and I had to get the sails out!:D

Harry (and others )

I pumped all the diesel out of the tank today. Looked okay apart from at the end which was dirty. Then I put my hand in the tank and pulled out 2 handfuls of this sludge/corroded bits of tank!
Does that look bad? It does to me but I've never seen the inside of a tank before.

I'm wiping the inside of the tank with clothes just now. Seems quite rusty

Cheers

My "Bug" was akin to a garden slug, the globs would amalgamate into a slug, that was too large to go up the stack pipe

YES!

There's your first problem to sort before looking at anything else. Could be a mix of bad fuel, water or rusty tank. That will be a priority job over the winter to clean or replace the tank.:encouragement:

I cleaned my 130l tank out at 10years old and took out a egg cup full of bits. But I'm extremely, what's the word, particular about filling up. I only fill from cans, my cans that have been pre-filtered. Unfortunately it is a lesson we all learn. And where to avoid filling up. I avoid marinas for two reasons, firstly cost and secondly low through put and poor handling. I always fill from commercial fishing ports where 10,000's of litres are going throuigh the system each week so no lying fuel.
