Beta 14hp engine

I have a 35hp Beta in 36ft, 7 tons displacement. In earlier years I had a 10hp Volvo in a 27 foot boat, 3 tons displacement. 14hp is way plenty for 23 feet, still too much in fact. A friend of mine has a 22 foot Quarto with a 4hp outboard, plenty of power.

14HP is perfectly adequate for your 23' BMC 1.5 is huge for your size craft. If you do fit a Beta 14hp, you'll find the staff at Beta good for advice etc. Do make sure that you new engine will probably need a new prop to suit - prop manufacturers can advise on a suitable prop. I had a BMC 35hp in my Moody 33 and re-engined with a Beta 25hp which is perfect(and you can get hot water with a calorifier fitted!

It’s a great engine and will do you proud. The prop will probably rotate the other way to your existing one so the prop walk will be the other way around

1.5 BMC was a cheap option in 60/70s especially if you went DIY route and alternatively the VP MD2 probably cost and weighted more don’t under power as the tides are quite fierce where you are!

The Beta 14 is a much more appropriate size of engine for your boat and you can be prepared to be amazed at the fuel consumption in comparison...

I have a beta 14 in a 3 ton 24 footer. Only problem is with the prop in the rudder aperture I can only get 4kn before rudder vibration make it uncomfortable. The engine has much more poke left. You should be fine.

I had a Beta 10 in my 26' Invicta and never found it underpowered, it was so very economical, so 14 in a 23' would be more than adequate. Now have a Beta 14 in my 25' but would be just as happy with the 10 hp.
Beta are great engines, competitively priced, reliable and good after sales service.

Beware too much power. Unnecessary weight and fuel consumption, but more to the point you need the right prop for the engine and then you're dragging that under sail. Diesels like to work and too much power means you squat by the stern which is uncomfortable and wasteful. If you only ever run it light the bore will glaze and the exhaust will soot. Get the right engine and prop for the boat.
