Best wet weather gear?

In the past, I have owned Musto, H/H and Gill oilies.
I have mixed feelings about all of them.|
Was particulary dissapointed by Musto, which started delaminating after about 5 years.

Currently wear Guy Cotten oilies and I can't rate them highly enough. Comfortable to wear and they keep me very dry.
My only regret is that I discovered their kit so late in life.

My current kit: NARUTO SMOCK

Honestly, Musto HPX Ocean over Musto mid-layer over Musto Base Layer, with decent socks and boots. Costs a fortune, but worth it. It isn’t all hype - they do know what they are doing. I haven’t had delaminating issues.

Alternative IF you run taller and slimmer - Henri-Lloyd.

Some 15 years ago, Madame looked at my 5-yearold Compass oilies, once red, now a fetching shade of pink, with assorted highlights, as I was packing them to go as sighted crew taking blind people sailing. "You're not wearing those - look at them!"
"They're blind, they can't see them"
"Don't care. You need new"

So off I went. I'd just about decided on some XM stuff, but then I made the mistake of trying on a Gill Atlantic set. Yeah, there really is a difference. A few minutes later, I came out of the shop in a state of shock having spent probably double on one outfit than I've ever spent in my life.

They still kept me dry on this year's Round the Island so, in fact, they weren't bad value.

Their Goretex range (HPX, MPX) has a lifetime warranty against delamination, they just send you new ones.

Musto is now owned by HH and their products have become very similar

FYI: Musto's lifetime warranty is in fact a 10 year warranty.
And you need the original invoice to be able to claim.

In all fairness, they did offer me a discount if I bought another jacket.
I did not take them up on their offer.

I don't think 10 years is unreasonable. It was full garment lifetime though, and was not a Musto warranty but a Goretex warranty.

So you would gets dressed up in all that for a day of Scottish smirr? Seems rather over the top 😊

I have done, and was glad I did as I was on foredeck when a wave landed on me passing Mull of Galloway. My nose got slightly damp but otherwise I was still very warm and comfortable.
Not all water comes from the sky!

Am I the only one who thinks gore-tex is a pile of poo? After a short while it leaks. Doesn't matter what it is incorporated in, oilskins, shoes, boots etc. The patent reproofing wash doesn't work either.

To keep my Henri-Lloyds going I'm trying Fabsil. Worked a treat on my Flying Fifteen's cover.

For an ordinary day of Scottish smirr or East Anglian haar, you wear the Gore-Tex mid layer. Either just the salopettes or the jacket as well.

They are perfectly waterproof and you hardly notice that you have them on.

My 13 year old Goretex MPX suit doesn't leak at all, and has been reproofed a couple of times including the recommended wash and dry

Snap.......
There are several different types. Mine are the ones used by commercial fisherman.
Not breathable but you don't seem to notice that much. There is also a wee slot which is very convenient. Had them about 15 years now with no noticeable wear.

I used to be a big musto fan.

I've had too many leaky items to still be a big fan. Though they do keep getting replaced for free, which is nice, but I'd rather just have a dry backside all season.

I'm quite interested in the new North Sails offering, since it was designed by Nigel Musto (who of course sold Musto a few years back). It's megabucks though....

15 years down the line I agree. VERY faded but still waterproof. Gone with HL highfits to get the length.
