best wax for fibreglass

best rec'd wax product for fibreglass... best shine results for an old boat? cheers:D

Measure best !
Wax is the protective coating only-it wont create the shine. That is all the prepartion work with polish before hand.
To my mind, wax is something that has to be easy to use, so I dont use hard wax. I suspect any of the £15+ bottles are fine. I use Meguires flagship. Top of the front deck sides need redoing during the season, but the wax on the vertical sides of the boat last all year.
But the grp needs to be in order first; wax is the easy bit.

Indeed. On an older boat you could use 3M fast cut, it's quite a coarse abrasive so you get good results with less elbow grease. Alternatively a colour restorer (even if your boat is white) will achieve similar.

Once you have a nice shiny boat, then you apply the wax to protect it.

Apologies if you knew all this already.

cheers guys... i have the farelca G3 stuff.. gonna get rubbing with that first.. company said on damp cloth rub in till not visible and rub down with finishing cloth... is this as is? will I get a sheen/shine at this stage then?
then I'll go for one of the wax suggestions suggested above. I have a nano turtle wax spray and also super resin from Auto Glym (although that seems to have gone runnier... can't quite remember how runny it was. These are my car products.. but prob go for one of the higher value marine products.
cheers guys.:)

If the gel needs some work, you wont be able to make much impression by hand. I can spend 1-2 days on 34ft boat that is in very good nick, and that is with the right power tools.
Wash, dry, maybe compound,polish,wax.. that is up to 5 times to go over the whole boat !!
Cheapest tool is Silverline polisher such as here
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Silverlin...Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item58945a62fe

It is a bit heavy, but works ok.
After that, the pro tools go from about £150-300.
I like super resin, but someone told me it isnt ideal as it contains fillers (for car paints) which isnt what you want in a perfect gelcoat finish. Still, I used to use it without noticing any faults!
I think any big brand boat polish works.

In the end, I think it depends just how mad you want to be about the gleam !

I have used this stuff on various boats and they always come up well - as long as you use a polisher, Has the advantage of being a one stage process. You can always top up the wax with something else later.

3M Marine Fibreglass Restorer and Wax

My father gets his cruiser polished by a yard here in Ireland annually. I usually give the topsides and rear quarters of the boat a wax again at the end of June. This year I used chemical guys "carnauba creme wax" and have to say that the boat looked stunningly shiny for about 2 months. It hasn't gone hazy yet but it's just not a good as it was. I have been using this wax on a Mastercraft X-1 which has red gel coat to the rear and its holding up well all season. I'm no expert but I would recommend this stuff. I have tried meguires auto stuff and didn't find it nearly as good.

Old thread brought back to life but nonehtless interesting; we've used 3m ultra performance paste wax this weekend and have been very impressed with performance, and as Piers says, it smells delicious! Here is our result:https://www.dropbox.com/s/ul7k1x52muavntl/DSC03906.JPG

Recommended.

What a fabulous boat cleaning/antifouling weekend this has been; turning very cold for next weekend I see.
