Having decided not to have a tv on board this thread has now got me looking at buying one. Having looked at Richer sounds website (they price match) and are great to deal with I see that most are "F" energy rated. I would have assumed that modern sets would be energy efficient....this search could see me browsing tellies for the next few days.

I just checked my Samsung 24" LED TV and it uses 1.7A, that's total current draw, including the DC-DC converter.

In this instance I was obviously not seriously suggesting that your jabberings on this forum represent an actual sales person. I'm actually assuming you're a chat bot experiment gone horribly wrong, and I'm responding partly just to see what responses we get going forwards. The first irrefutably wrong, the second an assumption of myself to divert away from his mistakes, his slander and arrogance concerning a Curry’s advisor who has been comprehensively proved to be correct, and add his sidekick Paul who the gleefully went on to slander all of Curry’s personnel.
Such is the character or lack of it from these two contributors, is it really the direction in which we as a nation are moving, that such behaviour is accepted by other contributors?

I think the written (typed) word can often be misconstrued and interpreted differently from that of the spoken in person, especially given the differing colloquial dialects in different parts of the country. We should try not to take each other too seriously to be honest.

Internet forums are a godsend for many of us getting free information from others who may have more knowledge and experience in certain fields. We are under no obligation to follow this advice but I for one find it generally very useful.

I did mention earlier, you seem to be having some difficulties understanding how internet forums work.

1) When replying to a particular post one presses the "reply" button (lower right corner of the post to which you wish to reply). This allows other readers to see what you are replying to, rather than trying to work out what you're talking about or who you're talking to.

2) The emoticons are there to add some emotional context to some comments. They are commonly used to convey humour (hence the smiley). Without them, some posts might not convey their true meaning. When you're in the pub with your mates and someone cracks a joke you can usually tell from facial expressions etc that they are joking. You cannot see facial expression in a written forum post, hence the invention of emoticons.

I have no affiliation with Paul. Quite the opposite in fact, we've disagreed strongly in the past, but I do certainly see him as an expert in the field.

I wasn't slandering all of Curry's staff just the one that gave you bad information. It's entirely possible that you asked a bad question though, so I'll agree their staff probably made the best of a bad situation and responded with the simplest answer that yes, the TV can use mains power to supply its power supply.

I for one was informed and whilst I have an Alba tv which runs from 12v having had it's 240v to 12v brick amputated,

I am now thinking about a few larger flat screens that are lying about my house and wondering if any of them could be easily modified by removing the internal ac supply. And perhaps even my projector....

(Although my next project should be making use of an old laptop screen to mirror the screen on my Android touch screen car radio which runs Navionics and Amazon prime etc)

FWIW, i'm also thinking of going with a mini projector on our next "project".

I don't need or want a TV when sailing, but will likely have a repeater monitor at the nav station (19-21"). Instead of using my laptop, i'll go with a dedicated mini-PC to run OpenCPN and a few weather apps, and leave the projector and screen for when we have stopped moving and fancy a movie night.

This way also builds in some redundancy. Following suggestions on an older (separate) post, I'm also going to put a 10" Android screen in the cabin so we can run some basic apps (Navionics, repeat the MFD), as well as have some music in the cabin if desired.

None of this is in any way "necessary", but the cost and power consumption is so low on consumer appliances now that it will be a fun project

There has been a lot of very good information shared on this thread, and some reasonable differences in opinion. It's been enjoyable contributing, so thank you.

As someone who has browsed threads like this to try and extract information, I can tell you that one of the most off-putting things is the page & thread count going up as people just take digs at each other - eventually you just give up and go do something else as it becomes like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

Can I kindly request/suggest that is is accepted there are differences of opinion and move on? Leave the pedantics, semantics and digs to the anchor threads where they really get going at each other

AS I see it, they want a TV and you don't. Just buy a 240v telly and then it can only be used in Marinas, The rest of the time you get the peace and quiet away from it. A decent compromise.

As an ex tv engineer,not with Currys I might add they would not encourage people to connect dc voltage to them as the average person without electrical knowledge could end up damaging the tv and the customer would expect a repair under warranty,so whilst the internals are actually dc powered its sold as mains powered.
The customer cant say the salesman said it was ok to connect 19v to it when it goes bang.

If you don't connect DC to the TV it won't switch on. This isn't black magic, it's electricity and the manufacturer specifies everything about what electricity is required (19V @2.1A). It would be illegal to refuse warranty if this power is supplied as per specification.
