Having downsized I have done kit to sell.

I have not sold on ebay for years and years.

I don’t know how to use Facebook and I have been told there are twits and time wasters abundanct.

Boat jumble is out too.

Is Preloved or Gumtree any good does anyone know?

Is there anywhere else or better?

I successfully bought a secondhand outboard via Gumtree. A local seller, cash deal after the engine was demonstrated running when I went to collect it. Keep your wits about you and deal in cash when the buyer collects. Only display the item that you are selling to the individual, don't let them see you have a garage/shed full of gear otherwise you may get a night visit.

Ebay is free to sell now but they have added a buyers fee so it makes your selling price look odd (eg you list for £20 and the buyer sees £21.55 due to 4% fee plus 75p). Facebook Marketplace has a very high percentage of timewasters ("is it still available?" then nothing more heard). Gumtree is OK although still the usual number of "is it still available" and "wots ur best price m8?").

I now don't sell anything for less than £20 as a bottom line for time spent vs return. Plus, I am more careful giving out my address for the lower budget stuff as I don't want those sort of buyers eyeing up my house/garage for a nocturnal visit.

Why not sell here, statistically 50% of the people on the forum are nice people :ROFLMAO:

Those are some of the reasons I don’t use ebay any more.

How do I sell here?

Just say I have something for sale and suggest an asking price?

Might be the case. I would think you have enough posts but possibly not been a member long enough.
Thank you.

Just seen my title of “old gear”. Have now changed that. I only have good gear; some never even used. Silly me. Eyes bigger than my stomach as the saying goes.

Some is brand new and still boxed, but not used and just taking up space.

Even some life jackets bought brand new at quite an expense for quests of a trip that never happened and are surplus to requirements.

Spinnaker pole that is too large for our current boat is an “eye sore” in the garden I have been informed.

The forum has a £500 limit on sale items so would certainly cover lifejackets.

Selling on eBay isn't difficult once you learn how it works.

Yesterday I sold a bandsaw on eBay. It was too big to send so I sold it 'buyer collects'.

I had sold things 'buyer collect' before but this was the first time using its new (to me) system for getting paid .

Instead of just turning up and handing over cash, the buyer now has to pay eBay before collecting. He has to bring a 6-digit code with him which the seller enters into the eBay app. The buyer loads up and goes. eBay transferred the sale proceeds into my bank within a couple of hours.

Selling on this forum's 'For Sale' section is also very easy, and you get to deal with some very pleasant people. But it's not an auction, so you have to know how much you want for the items before you advertise them.

I usually ask for payment by bank transfer and send the item straight away; often before I have received the payment. I've never had anyone default on payment.

I always use Royal Mail's 48-hour Tracked service for delivery and I've never had any problem with it.

Thank you.

I will see if length of membership opens a portal.

I would rather sell to sailors belonging to a forum than try to learn how to use Gumtree etc.

In the past when I sailed a lot I would double up on gear for safety reasons, but having downsized and likely to sail more conservatively, I have been convinced space is better than stuffed shelves and cupboards.

Do I really need two sets of binoculars with inbuilt compass?

Do I really need three Han bearing compasses?

Ebay has become too complicated for me.

I belong to a motoring forum which sounds similar to your experiences here; forum member sends money via transfer and trusts you post it. I have bought things from that forum for £500 in that manner and picked things up personally and met very nice people.

I agree it’s a bit weird now eBay has a new selling system, but if you want top dollar, I still think it’s your best bet.
Yes, a good audience.

But I just want EASY.

Some stuff may even just go in a bin because packaging up is a hassle (to me at least). I have two old large Lewmar hatches that will probably be binned; Perspex needs replacing (a job I could do if younger or bothered or after money).

Missus wants a clear out of stuff we don’t use or won’t use anymore.

Some might be interested in collecting items. Update your profile to include county is a good start.

Yes, I missed all that stuff; looked too much like paperwork from old working times.

Collecting would be easy; fun too. I have bought items and met interesting people, often given cups of tea and long chats before departure.

I must dig out my never used spinnaker and snuffer and hope mice have not got to it.

No idea of it’s value, but it came with a previous boat and was simply stored because I don’t use spinnakers.
