Best fast cruiser/racer

As a fast cruiser I like X boats and Arcona but I think narrower beam boats of same length built more for racing will perform better.

Lots recommend their own boat so i will add - I do not recommend mine - slow fat beamed but comfortable - SWMBO would say like me!!

Modern concept

Back in the days when Sigmas first hit the cruiser racer scene with such success there were lots of successful racers that were also genuine cruisers.

Today the divide between the two concepts is almost total so it very much depend so how much the OP is prepared to compromise the cruising side. Flaming's Élan 37 is not really an exciting boat in racing terms but it is as a cruiser. Just how exciting does the OP wish to get. X, Élan, Dehler, First, Sunfast, Bavaria Match plus assorted others will do the job as exciting cruisers.

If the OP really scours the market he will find a forced seller of something that ticks the boxes at the bargain price, then he can spend a fortune on Parker and Kay, ne. Quantum, sails and be very competitive.
The kit on the boat and crew are much more important when racing than the boat.

Whoops! Just noticed the original date of the OP. Now I understand the post about vested interests.
Must pay more attention.

Strangely, G&M hasn't (haven't?) been back to participate in the thread he/she/they resurrected. :D
If they do have an interest in the "Winner 900" they could perhaps have declared this!

It is dificult to give a suggestion. You don't say if you want a new boat (and that means a small one) or if you want a bigger used sailboat. The size of a sailboat you need is a personal decision depending on factors that only you know.

If it is a new boat I would suggest the new Elan 320. It has the same hull of the 310, has a better and great cruising interior and has a proven record in racing, both in short crew/solo or crewed racing. the prices:

The test on the 310:

The 320 is just a bit better, lighter and with a better interior (lot's of interior space)

Unless you want to spend a bit more and decide to have one of these babies (lovely boats):

If the idea is a bigger boat with few years I would suggest looking for it in Italy, Spain and Portugal where the crisis lowered the prices of the boats. Good options, among others, would be the Dufour 40 performance, the Elan 380, the Salona 37 and the Comet 38s. I would choose the best deal: the newer boat in better condition.
