I know that the performance of antifouling paint is highly dependent on the regional location, and I am bringing my yacht to Portishead for the first time. I would appreciate some local advice on which eroding antifoul paint works best in this area. It is a relatively high performance fin keel cruiser/racer. Thanks in advance.

Yawn! Did someone speak?

I'm not aware of any definite consensus. I have used one of the Jotun products and more recently Cruiser Uno. I also know someone who uses the cheapy one called something like E45 and is happy with that. I'll use Cruiser Uno again in the spring.

PS. I know it's not really E45. That's eczema cream, but it sounds something like that.

PPS. Welcome to Portishead, Derrybeg. Do get in touch when you arrive in Portishead (PM me).

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. It is good to see an active local forum. Looking forward to the challenges of the Bristol Channel waters!

I keep my sailing boat in Portishead Marina and use EU45. It's good value and works as well as any others afaik. If you keep your boat stationary in the marina for months at a time you will get a slight build up of slime, but this disappears quickly after a blast around the estuary (or with the pressure washer).

If I recall correctly, there was a recent post in the PBO section of this forums about EU45. There seemed to be two camps.
Camp 1: people who hadn't tried it and were eulogising about International paints etc.
Camp 2: people who had tried it and said it was effective and good value.

:)

Cruiser Uno for me (well the boat really).
Have used it for the last few years and never had major build ups of any sort.
What boat are you bringing Derrybeg ? Racer / cruiser ........ sounds like a challenge :)

I always had cruiser uno on white Mischief at Portishead and it was fine. Excalibur has hempel hard racing but hasn't been out yet. I notice cruiser uno just came out top in a comparison in one of the mags recently, despite the general slating it seems to get on these forums. There has been a shift from CU to H at Portishead though, largely because Advance don't stock CU anymore

Hi,

I am suprise UNO was up to the job seeing it is rated to max 25 knots. So you did not have any wear problems then? UNO is a good product and very good value for money.

Nope no wear problems at all. And as you White Mischief was well used in all conditions. Even survives the lif tan wash off. The only thing I would say is don't go for the white, because it changes to an odd colour quite quickly. But I would definitely use it again.

I admit that speed is relative and that lots of people might think that 5 knots doesn't really count as 'a blast'. However, I would be very happy to come out on a fast powerful mobo if someone wants to give me demo as to what a true 'blast' might look like.
