I had an overnight in Berwick last week for the first time in 20+ years. Really enjoyed the stay and would recommend it for a walk round the town and the excellent restaurants close by over the bridge.
The almanac says you need local knowledge which I got by phoning the very helpful harbourmaster and found pilotage straightforward.
The downside is the new showers etc are not built yet so it’s basic and shared with lorry drivers for most of the time. On the upside the walk ashore pontoon is very well designed and made and prices are cheap.
This won’t stop me using Amble and Eyemouth but it’s great to have another option close to Holy Island and the Farnes.

We called in there for the first time last year and agree with what you said.
Pilotage needed careful attention as it was disconcerting to have waves breaking on the exposed sandbank so close by as we motored into the river mouth. The Harbour Master was very welcoming; he helped us moor as the pontoon is fairly short and there were already three boats there so we had to raft. Perhaps it was because we weren’t right next to the pontoon that we found the depth was shallow, with about 1m of water at spring low.
