Nicho, coming from someone that saw a biggish new Jeanneau demolish its forecabin and beggar its engine, in a bumpy ride from Gib to Casablanca, I'm surprised at you!
Ramblings ? I'll say. I was moderately interested in your reply until I read the following
" At the same time it will have had loving owners spending money on extra kit, which would cost you squillions to put on a new boat, so the total cost of acquisition won't be very diferent. If the older boat has been well looked after it's condition will be close to 'as new.'"
The extra kit that the "loving" owners spent cost the exact same as what it cost on a new boat if both bought it from new. The snag being of course that the mythical "loving" owner, who of course loves his older style boat so much that he's selling it to buy a nice shiny new light dislacement flier that actually sails rather then ploughs morosely through the water, has fitted state of the art kit that's now twenty years old, totally clapped out and if you buy it, will need to be replaced by funnily enough, the same kit that's in French and German production cruisers. As for the comment that the well looked after older boat will be in as new condition all I can say is take off your rose tinted specs and look at a 30 year old engine that has been thrashed because the old tub can't sail in less than a five, overstetched rigging, knackered sails, thirty year old wiring, dodgy keel bolts, and osmosis( yes Nicholson's and Rivals get it as well).
Thanks everybody for some really helpful replies. I am leaning more and more towards the Beneteaus after seeing quite a few of them at the w/e. I was very impressed with the 42CC, however I have been made aware that there is a 473 (1 year old) in the Med that is going for the same price as the 42cc,,,ooh yes!!!
I do not intend to go racing off across the Atlantic in a F9, so I don't think that I am going to get the best out of a HR or similar beast, our sailing is going to mainly be South Coast, with trips to France and maybe the odd longer trip during the summer hols.
