Hi all -

I’m looking at a 2014 Benteau Bareacuda 9 and wanted engine advice please.

It has twin Honda 150s which are very clean and good service history but only 70 hours since new. Am I walking into trouble with engines that have been so lightly used over ten years?

Not necessarily.

Is there a service record available?

Engines need to be run regularly to keep them reliable.

Have they been flushed with freshwater?

What do the legs look like?

Do you have photos?

The 150 VTEC is extremely reliable with 5,000 hours easily achievable with regular maintenance.

I have one on my AMT cuddy. I've also had the 135 non VTEC version on a previous boat.

I agree..the Honda 150 VTEC is a superb bulletproof motor. 70 hours isn’t much....do you know the reason why there is so little hours ? It would be nice if it was fresh water only...but if it was flushed after each use and serviced then it should be ok.
Hours don’t tell the whole story...I see so many people start the engines just for seconds only....or run then for ages in idle with the boat tied up just to keep the batteries charged....or my all time favorite, run them on land without muffs and a hose.

A mate of mine has just bought a tohatsu 150 which is a Honda rebadged. Fitted to a 6 metre cuddy (similar to my AMT).

Cruise at around 25 knots at 4,000 rpm which is below the VTEC band. When we want fun we push the throttle to its stop and await the transition!

They say that despite the hundreds of thousands of engines that Honda has sold....there has never been a single fault with the VTEC

Interesting.

It's the engine used in the Accord so millions produced.

Honda aren't sexy, they just develop reliability over years.

I think the 150 is 20 plus years in production.

I knew a Honda dealer and he said they purchased high hours engines (7,000 plus), dismantled them to see what's wrong so they can improve for next time....

Well on some Honda USA 3.5v6 engines, conrods can get loose or break ... bits punching a hole through the engine block, but the VTEC was still operational.

Many thanks. That’s v helpful guidance. I’ll hopefully have service records to review soon.

It is possible that the engines are younger than the boat....I also had a Barracuda (although smaller) and a Honda 150 (only one) but it got stolen and replaced by insurance....so the motor was younger than the boat

That's a common scenario.

My AMT had a Honda 90 when bought as a boat package in 2013.

Sometime in 2018 it was re engined with the 150.

The hours on the gauge show around 200 hours but is suspect that's the combined hours.

When I connect the engine to my chart plotter I will see how many hours there are on the 150.
