Bembridge, Can I get in ?

Plans for various work to the harbour next year inc removing several 100 tonnes of gravel from the channel....

The council hasn't given planning permission yet as there are so many parties involved with the running and safe keeping of the harbour but I reckon the dredging aspect of the BHIC plans will go ahead.

So the situation may improve....

"Is this the spit you were thinking of?"

That appears to be the (comparatively) obvious bank in the narrow entrance. There seems to be concern about shallow patches further out - between 6/7 and 8/9 was always tight I recall.

"Someone mentioned that outbound boats tend to somtimes push the inbound boats out of the channel"

That was from a poor yottie motoring out being blasted by incoming MoBo's. Guess what, the thread soon deteriorated into an Us and Them dispute!

After the article in July's Sailing Today showing the HM regularly moving channel markers in the Deben Approaches one can only deplore the Take-it-or-Leave-it attitude we encounter hereabouts (Christchurch excepted.)

Yup.. the pic was taken standing next to the other stbd bouy so its pretty obvious at low water how it intrudes into the channel..not so at + or -2hrs on HW !

I was entering on a rising tide one day about 10 years ago and was pushed out of the chanel by a yacht that wanted to keep well away from the beach....of course i was being 'slooshed' in at about 3 kts on the tide..hit said spit and swung arround broadside on. Put the boat in reverse to drag m'self off only to see the dinghy nose dive under the transom as the painter went around the prop!

Bl##dy great day that was, but great entertainment for the folks on the beach

Oops, not a good day for you. I know about that spit because on my very first attempt a big classic yacht had done just that and stuck fast for the duration - a very obvious warning to keep clear!

As for deepening the channel soon, removing a few thousand tonnes is going to give better access to more boats, so they'll be 10-deep on the Duver pontoon. Perhaps the beach is the only quiet option left - I feel a Small Boat Club rally coming on, how about it Jim Lad??

Colin,

I have fond childhood memories of the harbour. We kept dinghies there and the summers seemed longer then.

The harbour managment has never been good right back to the days of BR. But the job must be complicated by the harbours status as a SSSI and by the fact that a chunk of land around it is NT.

Plans include an extention to the Duver pontoon. Varoius fore and aft moorings and upgrading the fishermans pontoon which will also be for visitors.

Unfortunately local clubs and business are being squeezed. Increased harbour dues and non renewing of moorings.

Progress is progress.... as yet planning peremission has not been given. I posted a link on here a while back to the rather complicated application and various submissions from interested parties.

So time will tell. I think if plans go through drying on the beach may become a no no as various club moorings may get squeezed up that way. Time will tell.

Yes a meeting sounds good, but lets wait a few weeks as for me Bembridge is at its best when it isn't over crowded.

Regards

Jim

Thanks to alant, Chuggin, and to you all.

FWIW we went (almost) as planned, got in and there were still half a dozen spare berths at the end of the day despite three rallies. HM said that it wasn't as manic as the weekend before last when he turned away over 60 boats, and he expects it to get quieter as the weather turns. Never a problem on a weekday, when rafting is unheard of. I forgot to measure the depth but there was easily 2m on our berth at LW. IIRC the tide gauge in the harbour on Sunday said 1.5m at the bar about 3.5 hours before HW.

Well when I say easily 2m, that is based on guessing the draught of the boats in our raft, which weren't aground when we crossed them, and the fact that the ferry was easily able to get us to the beach at LW.
