Belgium Again!

I must have a word with the blessed Nicola and suggest that Scotland could also make a fair addition to its coffers by fining English boats for red diesel. It would be worth the extra bawbee on my fuel bill. Or we could make it like university fees where all EU students are free except the English?

Er, that would be DUVEL...

I lived in Belgium for many years, and one of the rather obscure local slang words that I came across was "geduvelled". Which means, inebriated, blotto, three-sheets-to-the-wind, so drunk that you can't walk, talk or say your name... wonderful stuff, Duvel! Made in a big industrial plant just off the main Brussels to Antwerp road, deservedly popular world-wide, but has its drawbacks. You could probably run your boat's motor on it, too and save all this red v white botheration!

:)

True, but it shows that the idea of supplied unmarked fuel and then refunding the duty is not impossible.

This is absolutely the right way to do it in the modern world. All fuel should be supplied with full duty paid and those who think they are entitled to duty free fuel should apply for a rebate. Commercial operations could have a regular account and get paid immediately while the rest of us would need to show why we are entitled. The technology surely exists for this now?

Absolutely right and that is what should have been done at the start of all this business instead of bleating on about the impracticality of changing arrangements at remote fishing ports.

When I was boarded just inside the Flushing lock, they said "No red in cans, and receipts showing tax paid ,dated no earlier than one year previous, for fuel in boat tanks. Any contravention was 4.50 euro/l for total tank capacity not quantity of fuel carried." That was a couple of years ago, so attitudes may have changed but it won't have improved.

Thanks, that takes Holland off the list too. My capacity is 3,200 litres (but how would any customs officer know that?) and I only fill up once a year or less, the last time was 2017. So that would potentially cost me €14400! Bugger that for a game of soldiers.!

Absolutely. For that matter, surely it would have been possible to supply white diesel and dye it red if it was being supplied without duty? The HMRC/RYA seem to have preferred justifying doing nothing to finding a workable solution. I am surprised that only Belgium kicked up a fuss about it.

There are companies who will supply duel take-off LPG tanks for domestic use. Gas comes off the top for cooking and heating while liquid is take from the bottom, though a sealed meter and then into car tanks. Every so often - normally once a year, I believe - you pay HMRC road fuel duty for the liquid drawn.

I was boarded by all sorts last year, and diesel was mentioned in passing once. He asked the colour of diesel. I smiled at him. He said something like 'yea yea red, I know, it is all you can get in England. Have a nice holiday' and off they went. No interest in tank v's cans etc. The Netherlands have always appeared more welcoming to me than it's neighbours.

The only time I have sailed there we passed a wee bit too close to a buoy which we later found marked an oil installation and were apprehended by one of their work boats. Some paperwork later I was fined Euros 1,000. Not the sort of warm welcome I had hoped for.:distress:
Oh and the urinals in the marina were set so high on the wall that, despite being 6 foot tall, I could barely reach over the edge....:redface-new:

I'm off to Holland on Friday and have been filling up with White diesel for the past 2 or 3 years, so very little remnants of any red dye in the tank. We're heading direct for Breskens / Vlisengen, but returning along the Belgium coast. It will be interesting to see what sort of welcome we get.

As I said above, people would continually cheat the system by reclaiming the duty paid for fuel that is used in cars. There's no prospect such a system will ever be brought in.

Whilst I sympathise with those lager loving forumites with small tanks nearest to Belgian waters, I have read nothing that will encourage me to visit and risk being stuffed with a huge fine, even if possibly recoverable on appeal. No doubt the land of Poirot will care not about my boycott but hey Vive La France, Maigret, Bardot, Piaf et Premier Cru and a 1000 litre tankfull in Guernsey on the way home. :p
