SSR vessels are required to display the appropriate letters and numbers. Does anyone know the requirements for other registrations-notably Belgian ?

No requirements to display anything in Belgium, at least not for seagoing vessels. We simply get a registration, proof of which is the ‘Vlaggenbrief’, which in its litteral translation means Letter of Flag and which gives all the details of ship and owner(s). Vessels on the inland waterways are required to display their Registration number on the hull.

In Portugal vessels are required to display registration, name, port of reg. etc. so I would imagine some of this would be required for Belgians but I´'m not sure. Also to wear national ensign.

Belgian regulations for sea waters require name and port of registration on the transom, but no number. If impossible on the transom, then on the sides.

correction: it's not port of registraztion, but home port. IIRC (but I should check) it might also be a foreign port.

You are right of course. I was thinking of Registration numbers and took it for granted that name and home port on the transom would be a universal requirement.
Wearing the Belgian flag is required when entering or leaving port.

I understood from some Belgian yachters that belonging to a "Royal" yacht club grants the right to fly the Belgian ensign with the crown on the upper corner.
And I thought UK ensigns were complicated... :)

Not as far as I’m aware. Anyone who buys a flag with a crown can wear it. .
There is certainly none of that nonsense of three different colours ensigns, defaced or not and all the snobbery or perceived snobbery that entails.
No one takes their ensign down at sunset either, as UK flag etiquette (which is a military tradition) dictates. I think you will find that Belgians are not overly concerned with flags.
