Being retired; painful

Our grandfathers worked from age of 14 until just before their death for the same company...drank at the same pub went to the same seaside town....stayed with the same group of people all their lives.
Dunno about that.

My Grandfather's generation made their own outdoor entertainment, in the form of WW1, which taught him to fly and drop bombs on people.

My father's generation did something similar in the form of WW2, which taught him to drive a submarine and sink ships.

A bit of boredom isn't necessarily so tragic.

I’m sure that is a good idea for some, but those we know who did this seem to find them a bind. “I’d like to do that, but we’ve no one to watch the dog” or “so long as I’m back in time to walk the dog”.
Obviously everyone needs to make their own decision on this, and I agree it'd take serious thinking, especially if one has never had one.

I've had my current dog since he was 8wks old in 2019, having had dogs in childhood and for most of the last 20yrs. Highly active when out, with immediate recall etc, yet a dream at home or in the back of the car, never goes upstairs or on furniture, etc.

His primary role is exercise and fresh air for me. He comes almost everywhere with me, or waits at home until I'm back. If I go abroad he goes to the dog-minder's, never been to kennels.

He's equally at home on the boat. Doesn't much like being below when running under engine and sometimes looks a bit worried in the cockpit when we're heeling excessively under sail, but the only real constraint is ensuring we can get quickly ashore after longer coastal passages...!

Do we know that he wants to volunteer, or even likes dogs? The choice of activity has to be his alone. Planning a bank robbery could be lucrative, and is something I would be happy to assist with.
I did originally say don’t volunteer....but everyone else seems to be pushing him in that direction. As for not liking dogs....the OP has given no indication that he is a bad person

Not reached retirement age yet...but I do fear most of my hobbies are based outdoors, so I wonder what the long winters will bring.

My Partner and I retired early, bought a boat, learned to use it, took it to the Med...........
Years later and back in the UK in an area I did not know, I needed to do something.
So now I am a volunteer telephone adviser with Citizens Advice. That's a great combination of talking to people and helping people.
CA has opportunities in different areas (and not necessarily client facing) , so why not get in touch - you will be welcomed with open arms.

I struggled to start with , decent sized gardens / house maintenance/ casual work to suit me , practical work really helped. Walk in green spaces daily, keep moving. Then boat , long haul travel to family for winter months/ short breaks away. etc. Read decent literature .I'd stay off tv other than odd bits on catch up if any good. I'm also almost totally news free, have been about 3 yrs ,,mostly so depressing I can't be doing with it.. Funny to look back calling it a struggle! However, now it's ' how did I ever find time to go to work?'.

With OPSEC like that I can only assume you've always wanted to be on TV.

Specifically Crimewatch...

No one can pay me enough to watch or listen to most of the so called ‘todays breaking news’.

And those presenters are being paid to deliver it! 😂

Learn to paraglide! About half of our intake are over retirement age and we have had a few club members over ninety before they hung up their flying boots &/or took up sailplane flying.

Build a smoker and learn to make your own bacon and kippers.

Start wildlife spotting from aboard.

Get yourself a wooden fixer-upper that can sit on the drive while you tinker for the next twenty years.

Learn to wingfoil. It is the latest thing around here and the participants are not necessarily bronzed thirty somethings.
