So it turns out there will be some resettlement money available to me soon, even if not "resettling" for a good long while.

I've asked several pirates about the standard career path and qualification path to becoming a charter skipper, but have so far received nothing very clear, is suspect for the same reason that no one will give away their good fishing spots.

I would be looking at skippering boats up to 70ft max, under my own company, with myself also as the skipper; Sometime this century.

What would anyone in the know suggest as the required license/qualification process?

It all depends if you want to instruct as well.

I am a yacht master instructor...sail...so I've been through it all.

You need to start by being a yachmaster...power. Then you get a co medical endorsement from the RYA and off you go.

To reach you need to do another exam and I think sea survival as well.

Enjoy.

Thanks a lot! Power indeed.

If you want to know ask the experts like Jon Mendez he will tell you exactly what you need to learn , exams to take etc.
My view on it is like most things in life it comes with years of experience, it can't always be learned in a classroom although that's how the tickets are given out.

You can skipper a boat with 12pax upto 3 miles offshore with a power boat level 2 comercial endorsed. To get the endorsement you have to do a sea survival. PPI, medical and radio course. I'd you want to go further get an advanced powerboat ticket. There are various tickets available. Depends on what you want to do.
