Beaulieu River - quick question.

Brian,

there's certainly a Keeping Copse and a Keeping House Lodge in the Beaulieu/Bucklers Hard area. Don't know about "Keeping Trees" though. Keeping is my family name and the place is littered with distant relatives. I seem to recall that Lord Montague's gamekeeper is Bob Keeping or something similar.

I am told this is where the family originated from but I am always interested in other's knowledge so I will watch this thread with interest.

' Keeping ' a copse seems a good explanation to me, just as some Mr Smiths had Blacksmiths as a Dad.

Isn't it the area round the first bend above Buckler's Hard where the small dinghy pontoon and birdwatching hide are?

Yes it is! I emailed the Beaulieu River harbourmaster and he explained it's about half a mile uppriver toward Beaulieu from the marina. He also sent me a couple of aerial pix which I'd post on here if I had more than one working brain cell.

Reason I asked was because I want to move my small boat from Portugal back to UK and I'm looking for a mooring. The HM offered me a choice of "The Trots" just below the Master Builder for a tad over £2k (I had a mooring there a few years back) or one at "Keeping Trees" for approaching £3k. I'm pretty skint so wondered why the second offer was more expensive. Now I know where it is, I'm leaning toward cutting back on my families housekeeping and clothing budgets in order to afford "Keeping Trees" because its a lovely spot, well sheltered and with an abundance of bird and animal life - must be lovely to wake up to the dawn chorus thereabouts.

Thanks to Emsworthy and Seajet too for their interesting contributions to the possible derivation of the name.

Cheers, Brian.
