be honest - how often do you get to do it?

Actually just though of another issue. On the East Coast, particularly in the Blackwater and the Crouch, the wind goes straight up and down the river normally, giving a dead run, which is rubbish for the cruising chute. Ours can be flown to about 165 degrees with the pole out, then it becomes orribly unstable. So it can be a faff to use it downwind tacking.
However, its a demon sail when the wind is from the South. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

We bought a whisker pole and use it to pole out the big genny when downwind. It doesn't give us anything unless the wind's aft but when it is it makes a big difference - way easier to handle and rig etc. - I love the look of a goosewinged boat too.
