I have a 2.5kg BCF automatic fire extinguisher in my engine room (twin petrols) - it is 'green' in colour. is this 'halon' and so I need to get rid, or is it something else - what is it? I can't see the word 'halon' printed anywhere on it.

BCF is Halon, I'm afraid - Halon 1211 BCF is Bromochlorodifluoromethane

You could replace with FM200, or dry powder. Dry powder is vastly cheaper, but check with your insurers that they are happy for you to fit it. Worth contacting the manufacturer of the Halon extinguisher, as they may well do an exchange programme.

dry powder will wreck your engine if it goes-off with engine running!.
wots wrong with halon, the yanks still use the stuff or is that "stuff the rest of us ?.)
due to a survey last week i know someone who now has 4Kgs worth of dry powder o/b BUT still has the old halon just in case
