I am looking to purchase a Bayliner Trophy hardtop or similar vessel.
I need a good boat for fishing, with protection from the elements.
I have viewed a trophy recently and found the layout to be excellent for fishing.
Has any one got any experience of these boats? or does anyone know of a good one for sale?
John

A good little boat , does what it says on the box.

The down side is they are generally mercruiser petrol outdrive and the hardtops are prone to cracking in the aluminium hardtop frame if you put a dinghy on the roof.

Personally I would consider an Ocqueteau or Jeaneau or Beneteau peche promenade with a diesel ( unless you are trailering) of if you want a fast out and out fishing boat a Pirate 21 (previously known as the Mi 21) with a volvo penta diesel.

Are you trailering or keeping it in the water ?

I have one, had it since last year and swear by it, not heard of the problem with the roofs though, mine is all grp?
My one has the V6 4.3, a little underpowerd if you ask the yanks but I think its fine, then again anything with less than a V8 in the states is classed as under powered. She cruises at 22 knts at around 4-5 gph and max wot is 33knts. The sequential lift hull withs its deep v gives quite a good ride even when it chops up. I have had some great days out over the winter which is the main reason why I went for this model. If you got any specific questions then let me know. Have posted a couple of pages from a brochure that might help.

Hi John,

I have a 2002 with the softtop and an outboard. I don't use it for fishing (Although there is a rod on board for those that are interested), more as a family boat because the level of security for Junior was so good and it was so easy to get around the boat without tripping over things and the access to the foredeck was well protected ( no steps up without guardrails ).

Try looking at Bayliner Owners Website for info from the fishing "dudes". There's a wealth of info there if you can figure out the search function (use google with the forum website in as one of the search terms).

Good luck,

Jason.

If you want fun then a med-deep V hull like on the Trophy will be far better than the Arvor, Antares, Merry Fisher and other Peche Promenade types. All of the ones that I've tried slam like b****ry in any sort of head sea. The diesel inboard versions are also very noisy in comparison with petrol outboard/outdrive powered boats.
All IMHO of course.

Can you be a littel more specific re size?

Trophy's run 17' - 28' and there are huge differences between the factor that are important at 16 foot and those 25-28'

Critically as Whisper has suggested is the powerplant - and this has a huge impact on models / price

Finally are you on a budget? ie Are you looking at the right solution for you including 2007 models or are you committed to compromise at a certain price point?

I was close to buying a Trophy for both my current and previous boats - overall they delivered high tech build with relatively basic fit out around my operational needs but I found better deals at the time. AS you see from my avatur I currently have a hard top!
