Bavaria 40, 2002 (J & J designs) information

We had a 2003 Bavaria 38, almost identical to the 40 except in size, we loved it, wishing you many years of happy sailing ahead

Me too , excellent boat despite the ignorant comments peeps make of bavarias , these boats built early 2000s were built like brick watsits , heavy glassed in stringers , german lloyds approved , we sailed thousands of miles over 7 seasons on west coast of scotland , with d2 55 (witthout evc ) a very reliable engione , and fast , deep lead keel firmly attached and gave excellent speed under sail , we often hit double digits with ease and safety ( me and trouble and strife ), as above i think the 2003 b38 was the 2002 40 just tinkered with to create new model . Our boat was fitted out with same equipment you would find on a halberg rassey . , you wont be dissapointed .

Seems similar to my boat, which also had the deep lead keel and the D2-55 (neither of which I think was standard though)
Took it from the UK to Greece, felt very safe in it

Great, thank you for the feedback, we are looking to do some longer passages (my goal is St Malo!), with hopefully Holland next year (lots of squinting at pilot books going on). The shakedown will be the delivery back from Poole to the Medway next spring. She has the upgraded D2-55, which is good :encouragement:

Generally early 2000 Bav robust and having owned a34 and sailed a50 in med all the bits much the same whatever size. I would check last saildrive seal replacement date and rudder for osmosis . Otherwise original elvstrom sails if stil there should be replaced as fairly poor. Mattresses on berths rather thin so look at replacing or toppers. Electronics should have been upgraded by now from original chartplotter hopefully. Sometimes the caulk in cockpit teak becomes sticky and needs regrouting maybe? Enjoy what is a great boat for trips to st Malo but do go through lock and avoid sablanes marina as tide rip and bouncy etc.

The sail drive seal was replaced this year, and the sails are brand new Kemp sails of Dacron with Vectran fibers running through it and vertical battens. The Genoa is of the same stuff with a foam luff. The Electronics are upgraded, chartplotter down below is a Raymarine Hybrid Touch Colour GPS chartplotter / radar (2012) - no AIS (something I will sort out over winter I think), but has radar. No plotter at the binnacle, however, there is a USB port and i have an iPad pro that I use with Navionics so I'll get a bullet proof case for that and use that at the helm I think. I did think the berth cushions looked a bit on the thin side, so we may get them remade or get some toppers cut.

Thank you, I'll plan our trip to the Netherlands first and post our itinerary up here for suggestions and advice!

Yes do have AIS if possible -we retro fitted send and reciever from Digital yacht on our Bav and worked well and might be less than raymarine option . Dont know if that version of Raymarine bluetooths to ipad but if so you might find more useful than navionics as the AIS is picked up via the raymarine set up-that said replacement charts on Raymarine exhobitant compared to downloading navioinic versions for reasosn which were explained to me once but cannot recall.
