Went to a boat jumble on Sunday at Pwllheli, just by the sailing club. It was organised by the RNLI, and I expected a "boat jumble". It actually was a jumble of boats - tenders that had broken loose and been washed up during winter storms. There were 30 in all, some were junk, some were brilliant.

I picked up a sturdy, mahogany built tender with thwarts enough for 6 people in reasonable condition for £10.....£10 quid!!! Even junk is worth £50!

4-5 hours TLC and I have a great little boat as a tender or something the kids can mess about in the harbour with. The RNLI was a winner also.

Well what else can you do when its pi**ing down with rain on a dreary Sunday with howling gales??

This shouldn't be difficult - just be careful. £2000 is an OK entry level and a good strarting place (where I bought my boat) is http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk

Your friend should check the following before buying.

Outboard with service history or at least a reasonable record. Current model with available dealer / service agent in local area of use. Suzuki & Yamaha are generally best. Maybe a local independent mechanic can run it up and look it over. If you make the purchase, have it completely serviced - everything!!

Hull & Equipment. Check for obvious hull damages - CAREFULLY!. Check steering gear. Check transom. Check seats. Check instruments. Has the boat been stored with a cover, or better still, under cover? Is the cockpit floor still solid?

Trailer - check for corrosion THOROUGHLY! Check wheel bearings. Check that the trailer is / was fit for purpose. So often you get a one tonne sports boat sat on a nasty old snipe trailer with knackered wheel bearings. If you buy it, waxoyl the trailer and box sections after cleaning and inspect / replace / marine grease, the wheel bearings.

Let me know how you get on.

Another good place to look for a cheapish sportsboat would be in Boat Mart. What models are you lookinmg at. I saw a Ring 18 with a 175 mariner, which altho good value, wouldn,t really suit a complete beginer with a top speed approaching 65 mph! You can't really go wrong with a Fletcher or an earlyShakespere, later to become Waverider. Good hulls.
