Hi!
I am planning a passage from Pwllheli to Menai Strait next weekend. Any hints regarding Bardsey Sound? Most of information available on the Internet is for sailing boats.

I would say same applies, unless in HUGE mobo, time to go through with the tide or slack water at least, no point battling it and always helps your mpg, stick to the middle and the tide will do the rest! keep a sharp eye out for pots.

It's not just the Sound, watch out for the Tripod overfalls (just around the corner) if it is wind over tide. If you arrive at the Caernarfon bar early then Llandwyn Island is a nice spot to wait if it isn't a SW'ly gale. If it is SW'ly & you need to wait for the tide on the bar, stop early at Port Dinllaen, it will be more sheltered there in a SWly.

Some very strong currents around that area, while it isn't as important at planing speeds, they can result in short steep overfalls that will stop you planing! Expect the boat to kick around quite a bit in the fast water bits, even if planing. For displacement boats you simply have to travel with the tide to pass the Sound & also the Belan narrows.
