One and only daughter started at secondary school in September. Not a good start - very sad to have left many friends who went to other schools and many tearful evenings. For a while that was the only concern. She then started to worry that other kids were getting 'Excellences' for their school work whereas up to last Friday she had got none. Then on Monday announced triumphantly that she had got an 'Excellence'. So pleased were we, and to add to the incentive, we announced that she would get a fiver for each apparently elusive 'Excellence'. It is now Wednesday and she has got five! (Boast Boast!) Apart from a very strong feeling we have been had, would appreciate any creative suggestions as to how we can hang on to the house without 'disincentivising' her.

Cap her! It's done to all successful sales people in the big firms! <g>

Sorry, read small print, managements rights to award bonuses on blah blah blah. Only paying you on one of those this month/year/ etc etc.
Rate the exellences, into ordinary (art, not payable) superb (exellence from draconian french teacher who never gives any) then only pay on superb.

Just be creative :)

Blimey - haven't you learnt anything in the last 7 years - TAX HER. -A windfall tax would appear to fit the bill, deducted at source naturally

Sounds cheap to me. Just be thankful it's just one and that you're not obliged to repeat the exercise! I cringe every time I hear this scheme at home. I say "No I'm not topping up your phone, you're irresponsible with it".. Then I get, "But you owe me £4750 for behaving normally".

Just tell her that she owes you a fiver every time she doesn't immediately carry out routine requests like "Clear the table please dear". Bet it'll even out.

Then again she's a girl, they do as they're asked don't they?

Sorry -didn't see the fiver bribe ...

Tough! But make sure is REALY getting these "excellences" and not paying teachers £4 for them.

I strongly disagree with the practise of "capping" as related by Brendan :)

Some time ago, i foolishly bet the kids £50 that they couldn't recite the periodic table of 108 (?) elements from memeory in 60 seconds. After a week, they did it. I'm afraid that i offered double or quits on Hamlets soliloquy and they did that too, which cost me blimmin £200 damnit.

At some other point, i also offered alterantive to pocket money raise so that instead of £2 or whatever they wanted , it wd be 1p the first week, 2p second week, 4p third week and so on. Not sure of the level this rises to but bankruptcy beckons fairly soon, and a raid on Fortknox within some months. Thank god they didn't take it up, hehe.

I take it you only have boys then Rob. Nothing but trouble these girls; although I understand that as they get older they provide a steady stream of crew for the boat.

Good Job too, it starts off ok after 4 weeks its still only 8p per week, then a month after that £1.28 per week and a month after that £20.48 per week. After this it all starts to go a bit hairy. After 6 months its running at about £85k per week and only a month later it breaks the £1 million mark for the first time. About 9 months in, its up to a cool £5 Billion per week and at the end of the first year its an astounding £22.5 TRILLION per week. - which is aproximately 20 times the entire annual GDP of the UK.

Yes three boys! Two are just at that point where they are muttering about coming "back" out on the boat! Little'un is still passionate about it..
I've seen evidence of the "steady stream" and it seems to work well. So take heart! My boys haven't had "sporty" girls in tow yet..
