Paul and I are planning a trip from Plymouth to Falmouth over the bank holiday - the first one I will have planned unaided (hopefully!). Weather looks great and I can't wait. Are any other forumites heading that way? Would be great to put faces to names /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Anne, we have done this trip many, many times and would not think it worth while mentioning.

Having said that, we have done it in a 35 ft boat.

Going Plymouth to Falmouth is boreing. It's 40 miles of open sea. No problem, but theres no fun in it. We only do that coming back, if the weather forecast is looking. bad. The way to go to Falmouth, is not actually be going to falmouth. Just end up there. Depends on the wind a bit. But it's North at the moment. So Ideal. Your boats fast enough, so dont need to make it a big deal. Mossy across to Cawsands, Maybe stop for a pint. Or scoot on to Looe. No tide, anchor in the bay. Pint, fish and chips, whatever. Theres time to look in at Polpero, or maybe it's a good beach day. Either way you will be in Fowey, quite early on. Easy enough to carry on to Falmouth. But miss all the spots. Theres loads to sea, but need to coast hop. Once in the Fal. It's a gem. Loads of places to go. Spend a few days tootling around. Can even make it to Truro if your not to shy. The Helford, Megavissy and Charlestown are all in easy reach. Dont make a big deal of it. Theres hardly anything to hit. Umm, miss the Udders Buoy, going to Fowey, then that bloody great rock on the way out. You only need a chart, just go left a bit if in doubt.
You can bet, there will be loads of boats going in the same direction as you. Mostly all aiming for Fowey, or straight to Falmouth. But then mostly all yachts. They have no time to stop.

The fun is about just trundling about. All in little steps.

Plymouth to falmouth is only 40 miles, but dead boring if done all at once. Suspect you could do t in little more than an hour.

Make it a fun trip, not a trip of endurance. Thats what boating is all about.

I hate agreeing with you, but yes, bumble along when possible. Though sometimes the longer trips are fun, and get you to where you need to be, if other plans.

If planning on Fowey this Saturday check, it's Fowey week this week from memory. Great fun, but very cramped, wall to wall rafting.
May be better to do the senic on the way back.

HLB thanks for the reply :)

With out meaning to patronise anyone - Anne is trying to get to grips with navigation so I thought it would be a good exercise for Anne to plan the passage to Falmouth - I agree not the most challenging plan (out of Plymouth turn right!) but I thought I'd start simple and progress up to the 'round britain trip' :)

We did the trip over Easter just as you suggested hugging the coast as we get bored without scenery.

Are there any suggestions for which marina to use in Falmouth - we stayed at Falmouth Visitor yacht Haven last time - is it wothwhile using any of the others?

Regards
Paul

p.s If you don't here from us on Tuesday - we got lost

Mylor again.. but you ll need to motor over to Falmouth if you want any shopping etc.
If the weather is very stable, then maybe get down to Kynance, as long as you re OK with the Lizard.. fanatastic spot to anchor. If not too keen, then anchoring of Meon is a good spot too.

I'll check if taxi is still running in a minute, down Mylor to go SAILING, I think ?

But you can wlk round the headland to Flushing, and catch our ferry to Falmouth.

Thanks Paul, Hayden and the rest of you for advice and good wishes. I have every confidence in my ability to get us there and will therefore be back in touch before Tuesday (thank you darling!! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif). Have been trying to have a BBQ on lantic bay over the last couple of trips past so maybe this weekend will be the one. I'm really looking forward to it - a short trip maybe, but to be honest, any time I get on the boat is fabulous. I'm trying to learn navigation the traditional way, with charts and aportland plotter, divider, a compass and 2 eyes, not just because I have a stationary fetish, but because I want to, I think it is important to be able to do it that way for the day the chartplotter packs in and because I love it! Sad maybe but hey ho. Will post pictures on our return. Hopefully with recognisable coast shots between here and Falmouth. Otherwise you'll know I got us lost! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey I live just up the river Fal in Malpas - plenty of mooring space and a decent pub. Lovely area!

Visit - Pandora in Restronguet and the Smuggler Arms in Tolverne - anywhere else will be too rammed to get in (Mylor for example)!

We are planning Sutton Harbour to Falmouth this weekend. It would be great to meet you if we can get together while were down there. We wont be leaving Plymouth until about 1600 Saturday though.

We have only been to Falmouth once so far but we loved it. Apparently the Helford is a real treat.

We have spent the last 2 days at Lantic bay, weather fantastic, but water freezing !!

We will be there on Saturday as well (Fletcher Sportscruiser 'Aquilla').

We prefer the most Western part of the bay- its only a small cove about 100ft across and you can only get there by boat, so theres never more than a dozen people on the whole beach.

Leaving Jersey in the morning heading for Pendennis Falmouth.

You have plenty of places to stay in Falmouth. The visitors marina is the cheapest but often gets rafted in August. The visitors marina is right on the doorstep of the town. Pendennis is close by but you pay a little more overnight.

St Mawes is a must, good holding ground, use your hook. Dont miss out Helford River, if you have time. Particularly now the weather looks more settled. Suggested anchorages would be off Trebah or Durgan. There are also some visitors moorings further up river.
