Banging Halyard on Hamford Water

I've honestly never noticed any of these noises, I have good hearing so it's not a deafness thing, I'm sitting in Weymouth harbour right now in. F5, I hear wind in the ringing and if I try and be aware of it I can hear the halyards clanking and now I mention it the main traveller squeaks but I'm never normally aware of these things going on. Does that mean I'm relaxed or the just don't care?

Well, I can sleep through banging halyards, if I have to. But I am well aware that to many people they mean a sleepless night, so I take care that mine don't rattle. But I can't sleep through unidentified noises; if there's a noise I can't identify, I don't sleep until I've found out what ti is.

In certain conditions, a resonance sets our whole rig shaking, it can seem quite violent. It doesn't have to be very windy, just a gently breeze at a certain angle.
Hoisting our largest mooring warp and spiralling it round the mast usually helps but doesn't eradicate it. Vortex shedding I think it's called. Humming topping lift can be reduced by tying a towel around it or tightening / loosening the backstay or mainsheet.
I'm surprised nobody has complained about those noisy peacocks near Hamford Water.

Thanks. I am very noise sensitive and find tapping halyards etc. very disturbing. My own boat is easy. Grommets on coachroof hand rails for main, mizzen and mizzen staysail halyards, spare jib and spinnaker halyards and pole lift led down to the toe rail and kept taught. I usually find I can banish topping lift hum quite simply by slacking off a fraction.

I think keeping your boat quiet is just an element of ordinary consideration for fellow sailors as well as crew, guests and the poor old skipper. And if it's more of a hassle, as it can be with external halyards etc., (as I had before we re-rigged in 2007) well - take the trouble. It's worth it.
