Banging Halyard on Hamford Water

Funnily enough - I had to get up and sort my main halyyard last night at 4 bloody AM. It had woken the wife up so..... banging Halyyard or Nagging Wife - no contest

but i had it rigged to stop banging and the wind direction changed so sometimes it may not be the Skippers fault.......

How about running a petrol generator on deck to add to FCs hand

I have a Kawasaki 1400 genny, but it isn't on the boat at the moment
 
I know an Australian who had his boat in Marmaris, and he commented that in his Yacht Club in Australia they have a rule. If someone leaves a boat with a halyard banging on the mast they tell him about it. The second time it happens they untie the offending halyard and pull it up to the top of the mast. They don't get third time offenders!
 
Clanging halyards have never bothered me on our boat so I apologise for all the sleepless nights I've given others in marinas, I can hear two at it now, the mizzen halyard is thumping away and now the mizzen peak ensign halyard has joined in. The nearest boat is about 30 meters away and my apologies if that's you. I'll be a bit more contentious in marinas honest - but isn't it just a natural sound? Wind rattling a rope against a mast - do you tell the seagulls to shut up or ask the waves to be a bit quieter? Or put a sign outside the marina for traffic to slow down? And anyone in Ipswich or Shotley must surely appreciate the distraction from the police siren and dockyard noises??? As for chafe I've never noticed any, perhaps my mast is soft than others.

Yes, it's odd but honestly, tapping halyards do my head in like virtually no other sound! Wind in the rigging? No problem. Seabirds? Hardly notice 'em. Traffic noise? Rarely an issue. Etc

But one lonely little halyard a-tap tap tapping away sets my teeth on edge, makes me even more irritable than usual and definitely consigns me to a sleepless night!

My eberspacher is silenced (very quiet).
I don't have a dog.
I don't have a wind gen, i have silent solar panels.
The genny that came with the boat has never been started.

As you can see, i'm the perfect neighbour :)

Solar panels!, bloody solar panels blinding you with stray reflections, I hate solar panels.

Rather than apologise for creating a nuisance, why don't you be more seamanlike and cease being a nuisance? Its really quite simple to resolve and should take all of 30 sec per halyard.

I think you meant conscientious rather than the more Freudian contentious.....
 
We have a special sound that I am afraid may annoy others, altho' we do our best to prevent it. The slot for the Inmast reefing main "howls" when the wind is from either quarter, starts at about 10knots and gets worse. It is much worse inside the boat than out though. We do try to plan a head to wind berth but some marinas are unhelpful and sometimes the wind changes unexpectedly.

The worst case of deliberate neighbour antagonisation was met by 2 friends cruising together "down West" They were moored on a long pontoon up one of the Devon rivers, Yealm?, and a large posh vessel moored up a lot further along. Once settled a crewman disembarked carrying a portable generator on a long cable which he proceeded to carry down to where they were !!!! He started it up and returned to his vessel.

Our friends then pointedly carried it back and placed it alongside them, and said that they should take care to secure it to their yacht and keep an eye on it, as unattended generators have a habit of disappearing. :D

Whats your preferred method, tie it back or attach it to something else? One in the boatyard next to me has his main halyard attaching to his guardwire

All of my ropes run outside the mast, so twice as many chances for some clanking. I clip the main halyard, spi halyard and spi uphaul to the jaw for the spi pole. I then tie them back to the cap shrouds, apart from the spi halyard, which is tied forward to the babystay.
