I feel a little bit of jealousy Pandos creeping in as to those sailors who have done it in boats 30ft &under and If you did it in anything more than that you would of felt you had cheated yourself.... .

Although I haven't done any of the Jester challenges I have done extensive offshore passages in my Twister. She meets the criteria and is a fine sea boat as my 18 day trip to the med proved. I have thought of doing the JC but I would only be satisfied doing it in a Vertue or a Folkboat. For me anything else wouldn't quite fit the bill. Who knows what the future holds and perhaps if circumstances change I may plan to join in the future. Will have to learn Val Howells grog recipe first.

There's something in the parallel with the parable of "The good woman finds a good man, marries him, then immediately sets out to change everything that made him 'good' in the first place."

Absolutely correct...

Just look at the first post in this forum for a description of how good things were prior to the, rumoured decision to impose a hard cutoff of 32 feet...

"In a bid to recapture the very essence of ocean racing, there are no entry fees, no judges, no committees, no scrutineering, and no real limits, with the exception that all boats taking part should be under 30ft loa.. (Bigger boats can take part by invitation from the other competitors.) If you feel you and your boat are up to it, you’re welcome to join in."

Sad to see your old 'glayva' looking very lonely in essex marina's unloved section. Would be a good project for someone.
Brian.
I hadn't realised Glayva was still in Essex Marina. The person who bought it from me was supposed to be taking it up to Yorkshire I thought, unless it has been sold again and come back down to the Crouch/Roach.

Very strong boat let down by only having single inner shrouds. Three years in a row I had to replace the rigging as each of the inner shrouds started to break down by the lower swages.. But as a result a few journals have credited me with the longest single tack of 2,300 miles which was a port tack from Newfoundland to England. I was very very lucky to have a NW wind all the way. My plan B if the wind changed was to go into St Johns.

I was suprised to see her. She was on the hard there for a couple of years now they have moved her into the wreck section, suspect they haven't paid storage on her.

P.s. don't think i'll finish my contessa 32 in time for.baltimore 25 but it sounds a perfect destination. Watched a few youtubers who documented last years including samsails in a hurley and he is also based on the east coast.

How does one manage to find insurance for these Jester challenges. Mine limits me to an 18hour passage max single handed .
You are with the wrong insurance company!

While my boat is over 30 feet in old money, I shall be heading off to Baltimore about the time that the Jesters will be doing their stuff. With a start date of Sunday 15/06/2025 I might still have a week of peering over my spectacles and announcing to 400 students that they may turn over their examination paper.

In the past there as been talk of a loosely organised event for 'slightly bigger' boats that may or may not happen. One option might be to depart the following Sunday 22/06/2025. After doing something that could loosely be called a briefing in Saltash Sailing Club, only because I'm a member and the beer is a reasonable price, and would be down anyway.

P.S. If the weather is shite we can always stay in the bar.
