Bad weather

Thanks, there were a lot of boats there earlier but some moved before dark. I thought about it but decided it might still be too busy. Also a chance that wind might end up 45kts directly onshore. Wind has swung around to about 300 deg. now and gusting to 42kts. I think it's likely to slowly move round a bit further and drop in next 5-6 hours.

Mike hope all went well over night , although still blowing , the good news is it should slow down as the day goes on .

Thanks Vic, last I heard he was holed up in Sivota Mourtos but I haven’t been there for a long time and don’t recognise the picture, maybe Vlicho?

ps just completed on the boat!

Hard to tell by that pic but I wouldn't say it Vlicho , the quay taken up be Ionian sails and the road quay is almost packed with unmoved boats .
Good news on your new boat, sure you be very happy on her .

Epidavros apparently. Daily Mail has an article and more pics.

We left there on Tuesday and sail up to Itea in 2.5 mts seas and gust that topped 45 kts in the gulf of Corinth
at the time we did wonder if we made a mistake and should had stayed put .
The plain was to go into port Corinth but the seas where so big that getting in would had been to dangerous.
Glade now we did move on .

What came to light on the reports we had from people we know is how unhelpful people in power are , if they opened the bridge at lefkas and let the boats pass , boat wouldn't had sunk and in Siracusa the CG wanted people off the quay , where it was quite safe , luckly skippers stood there ground and the CG backed off .
In Siracusa and Malta friends was refused a berth when clearly there was room and had to sit out the winds .

Here's some vids of the North quayside, in Levkas, just before the bridge'
In passing, I was chatting to the Operations Manager for SailingHolidays, and he was saying that they've had 2 boats sunk on a quayside, somewhere near Athens, and they were struggling to save a third. Everybody got off the boats ok, though.

They didn’t save the third. It was Epidavros and fortunately it was turnaround day but the next flott was positioning the boats back to Corfu. I’ve heard that the whole flott was damaged and will need lifting for repair.

Sad to see

There about 8 boats somewhere in front of us , they must had left Trizonia early as when we woke they where gone , it's flat clam now light winds and we been on the engine all day , heading for Messilonghi , I guess the fleet may be there when we arrive .

There are two SH flots in the area. The Delphi flot left Epidavros last Monday and is ahead of Sailaboutvic between Trizonia and Messolonghi. The Scirocco flot is the one in Epidavros. We left the Delphi flot last Sunday and wished we could have stayed for the return trip to Corfu. Maybe not now!

Does anybody know where this is please? My son is a Flott engineer with SH and not heard from him for a while, hope he’s not too busy!

This photograph was uploaded to several Greek news sites without indicating the exact place it was taken.
The article was reffering, among others, to several sunken or damaged yachts in the areas of Kalamata, Pylos, Mani, Ancient Epidavros and Corinth.
It also makes clear that no person was harmed or affected by these incidents.
The Port Police had only to safely disembark a 54 old German woman from a yacht under German flag in Kalamata.

I'm Greek living in Athens. If I can help in any way I can, just tell me so.

Yes, that's where we all are Vic.. Flat calm, not a breath of wind. Didn't see you in Trizonia. Did you see the wedding party? The Wedding was supposed to be an outdoor event. We really felt for the bride walking past in torrential rain holding her wedding dress up to her waist. Bridesmaids were the same. They did let some fireworks off though.

I'm on the Delphi flot to Corfu. It's been a little damp so far ☔☔☔☔

I hope you are in the only floating pontoon of the port. IMHO safest part of the Harbour....

Should be there in the evening doing some work on my boat, say hi if you're around

Cheers

Hi Vas I have only just seen your message. We came down to Paleo Trikeri yesterday and are anchored back on to the end of the concrete pier where the internet is intermittent. We have a bit of swell getting round into the bay but we coped OK overnight, well sheltered with wind no more than 20kts.

While in Volos we stayed on the Sail Aegean quay (very helpful people) but we had to leave as they had their boats returning. We were really surprised to see how big the quays are with loads of spaces but so few of these berths available for visitors. The city would do well to sort this out!

We now in Massilonghi with your fleet . I hear sailing holidays have had some problem with another float and some have sunk ? .

The boat sunk by the bridge was nothing to do with the bridge opening. He had been there a couple of days sorting some problems out. He's a friend of mine and, along with a couple of others we were there Thursday evening putting extra lines on, more fenders etc but pretty dangerous trying to do anything. He had 2 anchors, bow and stern, out into the canal trying to hold the boat off the wall but it was pounding quite badly. The boat you see in the pictures tucked in and pushing his stern out was, on Thursday evening, 10m clear of him. We persuaded the owner to come back and stay on board one of our boats in the marina as too dangerous to be on his own. Overnight the maximum gust I had in the marina was 42kn but it was probably more than that at the bridge early evening.
We went back in the morning to find the boat that had been clear astern of him had broken it's mooring lines and ridden forward as in the videos on facebook. It's pushpit was swinging around clear of it's fixings as were 2 bow anchors. The anchors were crashing into and around my friends stern causing lots of damage. As the boat came forward it had cut through the heavy stern lines we'd put on the night before so that his stern was being pushed progressively further out. His bathing platform was long gone leaving holes in the stern and his boat was well down by the bow already. Absolutely nothing we could do but I took some video and pictures, earlier than those on facebook, and not published anywhere to show the damage and its cause. The wind was so strong by that quay that, even when braced against it, the gusts knocked you backwards.

The boat further along the quay with its genoa blown out also belongs to someone I know. He had been anchored close to the town but needed his engine out so went up by the bridge. Obviously no chance of moving when the storm hit but was well tied on and very well fendered. In the morning his lines were holding and his genoa was still OK but most fenders burst and he'd lost several stantions. Genoa must have unfurled sometime around 9AM, shortly before the other boat finally went down. At about that time I recorded a gust of 47kn in the marina.
All very sad for Paul who has lost his home. He just has the clothes he was wearing and a small grab bag. A fund has been set up to help him with short term costs and anybody feeling generous can donate here
