Bad news from Bembridge

Re: Bad news from Bembridge.... this one ??

Not sure that I can see anything in the County Press Article that reassures that it will be a good thing.

Whilst Bembridge could do with a modest increase in visitor amenities I for one hope it won't lose it's charm.

It would also be a pity if businesses like the Atrills suffer.

Changes to Bembridge ....

Since a small child with my Father I have seen Bembridge change from a pleasant small harbour where you either anchored or ran up on the beach. The Smugglers Hut pub with Lobster in basket etc....... it's evolution and building of Brading Marina etc.
Installation of Visitors pontoons and increases in harbour fees etc.

It would seem that Isle of Wight is bent on Cowes style development - cutting out locals and going for higher fees etc. We see Newport already planned to have increased facilities and development .... now Bembridge.

For me I am sad to see much of the charm and attraction of the places get pushed aside in the rush to Marina'ise .....

I wonder when Newtown will fall prey ???????

Re: Bad news from Bembridge.... this one ??

The harbourmaster says that the harbour will be brought up to date. I think he's missing the reasons that attract most visiting yachts. The extension of the pontoon to the shore is seen by many as a backward step from the previous arrangements. Certainly the harbour board decreased the visitor berths in the process, but I can't see a more swish, 21st century marina being the answer. I suspect they're going to stick another pontoon in somewhere, which would mean more dredging, or do something to Fisherman's quay.

Plans like these to dredge the harbour and build a socking great marina have been doing the rounds for decades, though, and these may go the way of all the others. It wouldn't hurt for all who visit the place to make their feelings known to the Harbour Improvement Company:

The charm of a lot of small places went years ago. It is because of the increase in visitors that these things happen and I guarantee that the changes will bring in more visitors - so it will go ahead eventually.

As for Newtown, it probably won't happen yet because of the NT. Personally I don't rate it because it is always full (mostly with people who have no regard for anyone else and haven't got a clue how to anchor) and consequently is generally an unattractive place. Now if they were to build a decent marina there......

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

I'd disagree that the charm has gone completely.

Whilst it is true that both Bembridge and Newtown suffer from over crowding at times, it is still possible to avoid the crowds and enjoy the surroundings.

I really don't see that building big marinas will help.

Sounds like progress for the sake of progress.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

Talked to a friend on the train this morning who lives and keeps his boat in Bembridge. His view is that the marina owner is trying to apply leverage to get his planned extension of the Duver pontoon by threatening to let the harbour go back to nature - no dredging, buoy maintenance etc.
For my money, Bembridge ceased to be a pleasant place to visit when the Duver pontoon first went in. Nowadays it turns into a heaving mass of rafted boats, usually making the channel almost impassable, with the accompanying noise and lack of the peace that many of us sail for. It's joined Lymington on my list of places totally lacking in pleasure. Much better to anchor in Priory Bay with guaranteed tranquillity.

Except for the Solent slop that seems to go on all night, keeping you awake. Don't know why it is, but I have tried all over the Solent: Bembridge, Priory, Osbourne, Hillhead, Thorness Bay, outside Newtown and never got a good nights sleep. Whereas in Alum bay I've had very comfortable nights.

Presumably there must be enough traffic all night to keep the rolling going.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

I think if the development of Bembridge is done in a sympathetic way, it could be a benefit for all involved. Yarmouth and the Yar I think are a good example of how to keep the charm but also offer modern facilities.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

I quite like Yarmouth, despite it getting so busy at times (Saturday evenings). I'm not sure I'd like Bembridge quite as much if they went the same way. The trouble is, the one thing that really attracts loads of people to Bembridge is the memory of what it was like when hardly anyone ever went there. The best thing to do is put out loads of stories about it being crowded and always full, then people will believe it's not worth visiting.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

For me, part of the appeal of Yarmouth is the rafting on a busy weekend. Can't think of anywhere else in the Solent area where rafting has the same appeal.
I guess part of the success of Yarmouth is due to the close proximity of a number of pubs and restaurants to the moorings.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

Nail on the head there Kevin....IMO.

Yarmouth has a vast number of pubs etc close at hand and has a "bustle" about it.

Bembridge on the other hand is a quiet yet working harbour.... some where away from it all.

I know things have to progress but I really do hope English Nature do their job to protect the local environment.

I also hope that the small low budget boaters amongst us do not get priced out of the market.

Re: Changes to Bembridge ....

Know what you mean Kev, get to Yarmouth early on Sat (Friday eve?) then sit there in the cockpit, glass of French grape juice of course and watch the entertainment unfold!

I dont think there is too much to worry about with Bembridge, the time it took to simply extend the pontoon to dry land and then get a shower block open and then three years on, the office is still in a portacabin! No by the time they get done it'll be years on!

Boating nimbys

In a month or so this forum will be awash with posts from peeps moaning about the rising cost of moorings. The country is getting richer and peeps have more leisure time. More moorings need to be and will be created, here there and everywhere. Why shouldn't Bembridge benefit from the increased affluence of the boating community, or is that most of the posters who wish it to remain in some form of victorian time warp are just plain selfish. It's like listening old folk talking about the 'golden age'. There never was one and never will be one. Enjoy progress because you sure as hell are not going to stop it!

Re: Boating nimbys ..... so we should all follow you ?

Because you think that evolution and development are good and that producing extensions of Cowes etc. is correct ??

Sorry but I will not get in line and follow you - I value good development in suitable places, but detest loss of character and development for developments sake.

Bembridge has suffered at the hands of people since changed hands some years ago - broken promises about dredging and improvements etc. Now it seems that the latest developer to get in will bludgeon his way through and upset the SQ that has prevailed .......

I like tieing up to a pontoon and access to electric / water etc. - but also appreciate the simpler forms .... Boating is not just getting from one electric socket to the next ..... there are other delights to be had !
